when my dumbass finally realized that translations from basically any language to english could never be 100% accurate, i realized learning another language was a pointless endeavor. beyond the most basic of interactions, there is always going to be a portion that gets lost since there is no direct equivalent. cultural nuance, really. the sole exceptions to this are constructed languages like esperanto, but nobody cares about those.
Yes, everyone should be dumb, it is great to be stupid
>>221947159>you cannot translate a language without losing nuance>so you should not learn another language, only translate.
>>221947159Germanic languages to english translations are pretty solid. It’s a matter of cultural distance
>>221947188yeah, you can comprehend concepts that are perhaps beyond the language you currently speak. You are not like some English machine that will never truly understand another language besides what can be filtered through English, you can learn concepts and ideas expressable in another language.
>>221947213Definitely not the case IMO.
>>221947159It's not pointless, the purpose of learning another language is so you DO get that which would be lost in translation because you don't have to translate anymore. You don't manually translate in your head, you understand the other language instantly like you would your mother tongue.
>>221947159You do realize that also happens with every human interaction ever. Right here for example, you and I have a pretty different cultural backgrounds and it's very likely we understand some words in different ways, even if we do speak the same language. Even in situations where you are speaking to a family member, there's always going to be some things that don't get across to the other. When it comes to learning a new language, the gap in communication is obviously wider in the beginning, but it's also the obvious reason why you should always learn about the culture surrounding the language. Just like you've learned the cultural nuances of American English, you could also learn the cultural nuances of some other place and language.
>>221947300That's not how language learning works, you are just retarded
>>221947159Depends on what you are tanslating. A lot of more frank discussions are near 1 to 1, its when you get into inferential shit or particular cultural nuances it can get a bit different, but even then you can usually find rough equivelence. I studied latin and a bit of Spanish, and I think it has helped me to better understand the nature of language broadly by giving me a point of reference.I can usually get the intentions of something language specific with a bit of good explanation.
>>221947300No? All languages describe the same things. The untranslatable parts of language include wordplay, cultural concepts, etc. which can still be learned. But fish, peces, 鱼类, pыбы, and ikan all basically mean the same thing https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Swadesh_list
>>221947159sounds like a lot of words coping with the fact you're too much of a retarded nigger to learn a second language
>>221947159>Describes the only actual reason for learning a language in the modern age>"Because of this I realized it was pointless"You are retarded to the point where it almost hurts
