Using Pierre Bourdieu’s concept of habitus, gatekeeping can be understood as more than just deciding who is allowed into a group. Habitus refers to the deeply ingrained dispositions people acquire through upbringing and social experience—how they speak, think, behave, what they value, and what feels “natural.” These dispositions are so internalized that they appear like common sense rather than learned behavior.

From this view, gatekeeping occurs when institutions or communities reward people who already display the “right” habitus. A university, profession, or cultural scene may claim to operate on merit, but often favors those who already know the unwritten rules: how to communicate appropriately, which references signal intelligence or taste, how to display confidence, and how to behave in socially recognized ways. Those who share this habitus appear to “fit,” while equally capable outsiders may be read as awkward, uninformed, or inauthentic.

Bourdieu’s idea of cultural capital helps explain this further: valued knowledge, credentials, tastes, and social skills function as signals of belonging. Gatekeepers may believe they are simply identifying quality or competence, but their judgments are shaped by familiarity with their own social world. This produces a hidden feedback loop where people similar to the gatekeepers are more likely to be validated, while others must adapt or remain excluded.

Subculture theory expands this by showing how alternative groups form their own systems of meaning and exclusion. In subcultural analysis (from thinkers like Dick Hebdige), subcultures develop distinctive styles, language, and values that often resist or rework mainstream norms. However, they still produce internal gatekeeping. What counts as “authentic” punk, hip-hop, academic radicalism, or gaming culture is policed through subtle judgments about taste, knowledge, and style. Outsiders can be excluded not only for lacking mainstream cultural capital, but also for failing to demonstrate the “correct” subcultural capital.

This creates a layered system: mainstream institutions gatekeep through dominant habitus, while subcultures gatekeep through localized norms that define authenticity against outsiders and “posers.” In both cases, belonging is not purely about objective ability but about recognizing and performing the right signals.

From a combined Bourdieusian and subcultural perspective, gatekeeping is therefore not just exclusionary behavior by individuals, but a structural process of boundary maintenance. It reproduces both dominant and alternative social worlds by rewarding those who already understand their codes, while making those codes appear natural, self-evident, and deserved.

From a critical theory perspective, especially in traditions influenced by the Frankfurt School and later cultural theorists, the problem with gatekeeping as described through Bourdieu and subcultural theory is not just that it excludes people, but that it hides how power operates while presenting inequality as “natural,” “earned,” or “authentic.”

Think of thinkers like Theodor W. Adorno, Max Horkheimer, and later Herbert Marcuse. Their core concern is that modern societies often maintain domination not primarily through force, but through culture—through norms, taste, and everyday ideas about what counts as valuable or legitimate.
