Why are some cultures and countries more obsessed with "the rules" than others? I moved from my home state in the south to a state in New England, and even though its a similar population of poor rural white people, complete with drugs and all, its pretty shocking how much importance these people place on the law. This is despite putting on the outwards appearance that they're rebels against everything and counterculture as fuck. Under all those tattoos and piercings they seem to be no different from the puritans they descended from.A big example is just how many "little laws" they'll remind you not to break, and they get so squeamish if you mention doing so. Down south, well, you don't go fucking around with other peoples shit, but if a sign says "don't do X" and there's no cop around, and X is something silly like "dont fish/smoke/skate" etc, aint no way anyones gonna follow that lmao. I find that southerners are much more comfortable with bending laws and making their own set of rules outside of the written law. I couldnt believe it when some weed smoking tow truck driver in his 20s with tats and gauges sternly scolded me for not having my car properly stickered lmao.How much of this is due to old strains of culture, I wonder.

Down south there are many rules that youre expected to follow, but the unwritten social contract and customs tends to be a lot more important. You can be sure that my mother would let me have it if I didnt go to church on sunday, but she aint a snitch. Down south people are a lot more likely to mind their own business when it comes to the little regulations and codes and whatnot. If my neighbor is doing something on his property, if it isnt murder it isnt my business. That doesnt mean i wont gossip about it but you bet i wont call no cops over it.Im talking about the difference between "soft ruels" and "hard rules", where some cultures have an autistic obsession with following the letter of the law.
