How come Greeks and Turks have similarities but Spaniards and Moroccans are worlds apart?
>>
>>222202852
Because Turks are Greeks who converted to Islam
>>
>>222202921
Well, they were Byzantine people (mostly Greek speaking and Orthodox) that converted to Islam, with a bit of Turkmen settlement and Balkan influx.
Depends on if you'd call Hellenized Anatolians Greek, I would.
>>

>Greeks and Turks have similarities

grik: european, indo european language democracy, non cut dick, can eat pork, bankrupt, globohomo

Howcome France has land border with Spain and Moroco is on another continent, yet average Frog is more Morocna than Spanish?
>>
>>222203322
Greek people did call themselves Roman and considered their state the true unbroken continuation of Rome, but there was never a loss of ethnic identity. Obviously Anatolia and parts of Thrace and the Near East were long hellenized, but the Christian Greek speaking Romans of the Byzantine Empire had an ethnic identity as Greeks, separate from other Byzantine people (Bulgarians, Armenians etc.) and the educated ones that knew about history considered ancient Greeks their ancestors.

But yes, the modern state of "Greece" is primarily based on romantic classicist LARP instead of being understood as an East Roman rump, and Byzantine history is glossed over in our school curriculum and national myths, blame the English.

turks and greeks mostly descend from the same people

morroco and spain are too different, only a estimated 30-50k Muslims moved into spain during the moorish times

>>
>>222203507
retards, morrocans are north african spaniards are Iberians

you yourself descend from khazar turks, you are more turkic then turks themselves
>>
>>222203405
>but there was never a loss of ethnic identity.
Yes there was? They thought they were Romans, and ultimately had replaced the Greeks. Roman was an ethnic identity, people genuinely believed they descended from Romans.

>the Christian Greek speaking Romans of the Byzantine Empire had an ethnic identity as Greeks, separate from other Byzantine people (Bulgarians, Armenians etc.)
There was no such thing as "Byzantine people", and Bulgarians and Armenians were seen as Bulgarians and Armenians. There was no "imperial" identity that envelopped both Romans, Bulgarians and Armenians.
>>
>>222203580
>They thought they were Romans
Of course. They were Greek speaking, Orthodox, citizens of Rome. But in no way did the Rhomaioi/Romioi ethnonym imply they were Latins or not the descendants of ancient Greeks.
>and ultimately had replaced the Greeks. Roman was an ethnic identity, people genuinely believed they descended from Romans.
Incorrect, that's an exaggerated myth.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Names_of_the_Greeks
Read the "Romans" and below segments.
>There was no such thing as "Byzantine people", and Bulgarians and Armenians were seen as Bulgarians and Armenians.
I didn't mean that as an ethnic identity, but as people living under Byzantine control. "Citizens" or "subjects" would fit better because their citizenship status was inconsistent.
>>
>>222202852
It's because Greeks and Turks are both Arabs. Next question.
>>
>>222202852
1000 years less of islamic erosion.

We used to be cousins in one Roman Christian world.

Morocco got devoured in the late 600s-early 700s. Constantinople didn't fall to them until 1453
>>
>>222202852
Because Greeks and Turks are the same people. Greeks kept the Byzantine language and faith while Turks were converted then indoctrinated with steppe nationalist bullshit.
Spanish and Moroccans are different people. Roman Mauritania was never settled or Romanized, and few Moors settled in Spain under Al-Andalus.
>>
>>222204019
eh some hellenic stuff returned in the 12-13th century
the reason why anatolian greeks converted to islam fast is because of the lower tax rate and often more liberties compared to a serf under a dynatoi
the christian serf had to pay massive taxes, pay for his own armour, be a literall slave for the dynatoi

imagine right now, the ayy lmaos invade greece, they basicly offer you this:

stay greek and pay 21% of your income yearly to them, you keep your own greek laws and you dont need to be conscripted

adopt ayy lmao culture and religion, your tax rate will be 7% and your draft will be rare

or stay with greece and pay 95% of your income to your landlord while he rapes your aunt while you fight the ayys

what would you choose?
>>
>>222204611
I don't have to imagine. Erdogan can promise lower VAT and tax exemptions and I'm welcoming my sultan to rum vilayet tomorrow.
>>
>>222204739
yeah basicly this, byzantium in the 7th century had a population of 6-7m people with around 30-100k soldiers

11nth century byzantium had a population of 12-16m and a native army of 15-40k people, they relied more on mercenaries then native byzantines

ironicly its racism that preserved spanish culture, even after the majority of spain converted to Islam, the arabs still treated them like non muslims
Spain would be speaking latino-arabic rn if it werent for arab racism
have you thanked a arab today for being racist?
>>
>>222204872
>they relied more on mercenaries then native byzantines
To be fair that was Europe's style at the time
>>
>>222204956
micro states yes, france and britain still relied on levies

its the dynatoi who did not want to lose their slaves in anatolia kept them from being conscripted, since most could not afford armour themselves

funny thing is this happend again in the 14th century, the ottomans blitzed trough western anatolia because they gave more liberties to the peasants
