It's the exact same thing as Europe or anywhere else in the world. Once ancient people became sedentary they rarely ever left their immediate vicinity in large numbers (ie. numbers that would be large enough to influence the genetic makeup of an area), especially not when there were as many geographic obstacles as southeast Asian (mountains, thick jungles, swamps, etc). Gradually after saying in one place for thousands of years distinct regional ethnicity began to form due to the limited gene pool.I think this stuff is so cool. Same with how different languages must have formed over hundreds and hundreds of years.
