The Americans didn't even want to be there, they just sided with the South Vietnamese (US puppet state) against the North Vietnamese (Soviet/PRC puppet state) in a proxy war

I just learnt that Vietnam and Cambodia used to be Austronesian clay until the Viet and Cambodians pushed out the Austronesian Champa. Many of them fled to Malaya multiple times in history, the most recent after the Vietnam war. We actually let around 20,000 of them to become citizens while we pushed off the other Viet refugees to Australia and the US.
