historically portuguese had colonies in Uruguay (such as Sacramento), and 15% of the uruguayian population spoke portuguese (30% if you consider bilinguals).
the argentinians always considered Uruguay part of their country, and the portuguese speaking part asked for our help, so we thought it could be a good idea to annex them.
it didn't work, so it became a buffer state. Later, the uruguayan government hispanicized the portuguese speaking areas, forcing spanish on them.
