Keeping it as simple as possible, the portuguese kind died while leaving no clear sucessor, so Spain took over. Meaning their colonies in the americas were merged and the tordesillas didn't meant much anymore. So colonials in Brazil just went on a frenzy and claimed the most land they could grab, when Portugal broke away from spanish rule the colony in Brazil already controled about 40% of south america.
