Mmm not really... The 16th century was the last period when Italy was arguably the most culturally, artistically and financially sophisticated civilisation in the West even as its political independence was crumbling. It was a peak of brilliance against a backdrop of gathering twilight. 20th-century Italy wasn't bad at all either. Sure, it wasn't the absolute peak but from the 1950s right through to the late 1980s things were sailing along quite nicely. The outlook for the future is bleak tho, there's no way out and no saving this country. It's Over...
