It succeeded initially because of the concept there is nobility in poverty. Then it was proliferated as the ruling class realized they can use it's more "tolerant" values to make the masses do anything they wanted.

I don't think there was anything innate about the Christian faith that set it apart from other faiths and cults of the time, just popping up in the right place at the right time.
