>>222426375Of all the post-Floyd grandstanding, making Juneteenth a federal holiday is maybe the dumbest in hindsight. Picking one symbolic event to commemorate as the end of slavery is kind of ridiculous since the impressment of impoverished blacks into servitude continued to be practiced in other legal forms for at least a century more, and any federal rights that were gained from the civil war and the emancipation amendments were almost immediately undercut by state segregation. It’s as empty and self-serving a gesture as Native American land acknowledgements.
