It allows to differentiate two sounds (s/z) to be able to write words correctly without having to memorize the spelling of literally thousands of words.People raised on dialects that don't have this distinction constantly make spelling mistakes because of it.Which makes it the superior form of Spanish.

The Spanish invented the letter Cedilla for the Ts sound, which they no longer use but it's still in the French and Portuguese alphabet I think.In northern Spain it switched to pronouncing the letter S like the Greek Spanish S that sounds almost like SH, and Z Ce Ci like the English or Latin American S. But those phonemes were too similar, to the S sound moved forward and became TH.That is also why Spanish lost the SH sound, it was too similar to their S, so they moved it backwards and it became the Spanish J sound, like the ch in german Nacht.
