They didnt want to go back home and since they had no real homes here they just invaded empty stretches of land and started building on top of it and the problem only grew larger over time cause theyd invite their whole ass families to live here and by the 90s when the dictatorship was over our lefty government and socialist-leaning constitution started saying that demolishing favelas was a human rights violation. Favelas didnt exist in Brazil until the US backed juntas, we had a couple ghettos but they werent particularly oversized or dominant, crime was basically a non issue as well since organized crime at the time was only an issue in the US and Italy. The decision behind the big urban reworks were made by a couple incompetent captains and the like who got special roles from their friends but werent qualified to boss over such projectsMost criminals are from the northeast, most favelas are composed of northeastern zainichis. And due to it being a couple other states there's no real way to regulate traffic either, someone with a bus ticket and a big bag could very easily move over and start pestering better cities. Also Rio de Janeiro was purposefully sabotaged by other states into picking the bulk of them as wellImagine if Europe had no border control whatsoever and negroes from North Africa could get in there with a cheap bus ride and do basically whatever the fuck they wanted. >>222460294Because they basically are. Brazil is an enormous country and the pure difference in distance between Rio and some northeastern pothole is comparable to that of France to Poland. They have completely different mannerisms, habits, diet, speech and even completely alternate to that of the average brazilian dating back to the 19th century. There's a really great book on just how absolutely violent and savage these people can be by Euclides da Cunha that had a pretty good english translation that spends a lot of time going over anthropological analysis of the people from there. They were thieves who got constantly starved by greedy farmers from there, many of the sertanejos had overly large body counts going to the 20s to 30s. Brazilians are only really xenophobic against other brazilians, regional differences here are incredibly accentuated and specially for those people. We dont come from the same culture, we arent raised the same way, we just share a flag (which is arguably more reason to hate them if anything, the lobbying from states from over there is absolutely enormous, they activly get in the way of this country going forward and many people I know personally will say from the bottom of their hearts they wish this country was split in 2, people who otherwise arent particularly racist or even radicals too)
