Japanese nerd (otaku) fashion in the 2000s was characterized by a tucked-in plaid shirt—a style popular in the 80s and 90s—worn with stone-washed jeans and New Balance sneakers; the look was completed with a bandana and a backpack worn high on the back.
However, since tucking in shirts is trendy again now, it just goes to show that you never really know with fashion trends.
Japanese nerd (otaku) fashion these days tends to consist mostly of oversized T-shirts and unstylish chinos.

Arnold episode where Gerald opens up his closet to reveal all of his shirts are exactly the same, acknowledging the classic "cartoon character only has one outfit" trope, I wanted to be that but in real life. And I feel like every day of life is like a television sitcom where nothing ever changes, it's the same routine day after day. So yeah...
