The novel trainspotting was supposed to make it seem like it was hopeless and miserable but several of them had their own government provided flat and lived off welfare because they didn't feel like working. Renton was able to support his heroin habit by just traveling to different towns and filing for welfare there and then returning once a month to collect how money. It seemed like a pretty easy life.
