As part of a spiritual war, and Jesus does not decry the old testament. The early christians tried to be proponents of peace but they were not total pacifists and after Constantine legalized christianity is when christian just war theory came about and the earlier church fathers had mixed views on pacifism.

Theres an element of trying to foment and praise peace in christianity but to ignore all of the other justifications for violence in it is ridiculous. Its a hierarchical religion that demands a degree of a strong martial culture to defy evil which is why the Germanic tribes all turned to Arianism so quickly
