It was always about optics for France. France had a ton of it's math intelligentsia die off in WW1 compared to the Germans because it wanted to prove "everyone was equal". Then in ww2 it was obsessed about hiding Asian/African soliders from being visible in the post ww2 celebrations so it could present the forces that freed them as being all white.
