My parents were prospective members for a while back in the early 90's. It wasn't really that bad and they were pretty nice. Holiday observances and birthdays were forbidden due to false idolatry, but they would throw random parties and get-togethers on weekends.

Far from being a cult, Jehovah’s Witnesses practice a religion that benefits themselves and others in the community.

For example, our ministry has helped many people to overcome harmful addictions, such as the abuse of drugs and alcohol. In addition, we conduct literacy classes around the world, helping thousands learn to read and write. And we are actively involved in disaster relief.

We work hard to have a positive impact on others, just as Jesus commanded his followers to do.—Matthew 5:13-16.

The Scriptures state that “God is love” and that he is “a lover of justice.” He has always urged his people: “Hate what is bad, and love what is good.” (1 John 4:8; Psalm 37:28; Amos 5:15) On numerous occasions he encouraged his loyal ones to choose a virtuous course.
For example, when Jehovah concluded a covenant with the ancient nation of Israel, he said to them, through Moses: “I do take the heavens and the earth as witnesses against you today, that I have put life and death before you, the blessing and the malediction; and you must choose life in order that you may keep alive, you and your offspring.” (Deuteronomy 30:19)
Did God establish ahead of time the choice that those individuals would make? Evidently not.

Jehovah’s Witnesses do not celebrate birthdays because we believe that such celebrations displease God.

>The idea of celebrating the date of your birth is a pagan tradition
>many Christians didn't celebrate birthdays historically, because of that link to paganism.
>Greeks believed that each person had a spirit that attended his or her birth, and kept watch. That spirit "had a mystic relation with the God on whose birthday the individual was born,"
>The candles were a response to the evil spirits. They showed up to communicate with the gods.

We worship the one true and Almighty God, the Creator, whose name is Jehovah. (Psalm 83:18; Revelation 4:11) He is the God of Abraham, Moses, and Jesus.—Exodus 3:6; 32:11; John 20:17.

The Mosaic Law is not binding on Christians, and even Jewish Christians were “released from the Law.” (Romans 7:6)

The Mosaic Law was replaced by “the law of the Christ,” which includes all that Jesus instructed his followers to do.—Galatians 6:2; Matthew 28:19, 20.

>>222907733
Acts 10:34, 35 states: “God is not partial, but in every nation the man who fears him and does what is right is acceptable to him.”

Sister, I have a crisis of faith. I have been trying to let Jehovah into my heart for some time now but I've suffered too much and seen too much evil in this world to be able to bring myself to do it. Only a true miracle, an act of love, could rouse me from my spiritual slumber. The sight of your pale, angelic breasts is the only thing that could help me overcome this struggle.
>>
>>222908033
>Jehovah’s Witnesses do not celebrate birthdays
I know you don't, that's precisely why I asked.
>because we believe that such celebrations displease God.
This belief is founded on nothing. Yes, it probably has some distant pagan roots, so what? Nobody celebrating their birthday prays to any pagan deities. It's an anniversary of one's birth and that's it, and it's usually spent with family and friends, which a benevolent God would obviously look kindly upon. Considering it forbidden is a ridiculous dogmatic overinterpretation.
>>
>>222908405
Although the Bible does not explicitly forbid celebrating birthdays, it does help us to reason on key features of these events and understand God’s view of them.

Why do JW followers want to grow their religion? Doesn't it create more competition for those 144,000 spots in heaven?
>>
>>222908760
I think you're a bot and not a real person. Bot of Abbadon.
>>
>>222908877
We believe that when 'the End' finally comes only 144,000 human beings will go to Heaven and rule the Earth from there with Christ - these are known as the anointed.

Becoming an anointed person is not something that is done by voting or selection. Instead, the anointed one knows directly from God that he or she has been chosen.

The majority of Jehovah's Witnesses are not anointed and will not spend eternity in heaven. They will spend eternity in paradise on Earth.

In fact billions of people will have everlasting life on earth and thus fulfil God's original plan for humanity when he put Adam and Eve in the Garden of Eden!
>>
>>222908956
So most people will end up in a slightly worse Heaven than Heaven proper? Shouldn't Heaven be some kind of absolute peak of enlightment and fullfillment? If there's something better then it's not perfect.
>>
>>222908142
They use that tactic on my family members that live abroad.. You should try to move near their congregations

God selects a limited number of faithful Christians who, after their death, will be resurrected to life in heaven. (1 Peter 1:3, 4)

They will serve alongside Jesus as kings and priests for 1,000 years. (Revelation 5:9, 10; 20:6) They will form the “new heavens,” or heavenly government, that will rule over the “new earth,” or earthly society.
Those heavenly rulers will help restore mankind to the righteous conditions that God originally intended.—Isaiah 65:17; 2 Peter 3:13.

The hope of everlasting life on earth is not an inferior one.
God calls those who will receive everlasting life on earth “my people,” “my chosen ones,” and “those blessed by Jehovah.” (Isaiah 65:21-23)
They will have the privilege of fulfilling God’s original purpose for humankind—everlasting life in perfection on a paradise earth.—Genesis 1:28; Psalm 115:16; Isaiah 45:18.

my neighbor is a jehova.
took me 3 years of insulting to stop these obnoxious religious pressgangs to ring me out of bed at 7:30 saturday morning to talk about jesus:
"I'm catholic and you are gonna burn in hell, heretics"
"because gramp didnt gas your ancisters completely, I have to listen to your bullshit now"
"fuck off im having breakfast"
"jehovas? pffffft" door slammed

He is walking bowed forward like a quasimodo, always a false grin in his face when in company, mostly his butt ass ugly wife or an elder.
But when he is alone mowing the lawn or doing shit, he has an empty serial killer look on his face and mumbles curses to himself. id say hes quite unhappy with his life.
these people arent happy. they are under pressure.

Plus, I suspect them having arranged marriages, all the couples here are austrian / german. divide and conquer, no solid local blocks.

the most retarded things an ex jehova told me are:
-no higher education, not neccessary since the end will come soon.
they stopped giving out apocalypsis dates since they quite embarrassed emselves like 20 times doing so, but apocalypsis never came.
-they believe jesus is gonna murder all non jehovas, even other christians
-you gotta spend your fridays / saturday afternoons at their churches, learning (and being tested) the newest bullshit the watchtower society has come up with via handouts snd brochures.
-the elders fuck kids but it doesnt get reported to the authorities because muh jehova community
-no blood transfers, you are gonna die
-no birthday, no christmas, no easter egg hunt but church every weekend, yay
-they harvest the lonely, the desperate and herd them like their own mental trained with peer pressure.
-10% of your income for the watchtower society

its basically one of those american homebrew preacher cults formed for tax evasion reasons that had the right theocratic mix to whip its subordinates in line. basically ultra kikes.

Religious scholars have routinely found the testimony and public statements of apostates to be unreliable.

In his book "The Politics of Religious Apostasy: The Role of Apostates in the Transformation of Religious Movement", Professor David Bromley, Department of Sociology and Anthropology of Virginia Commonwealth University, explained how individuals who elect to leave a chosen faith must then become critical of their religion in order to justify their departure.
This then opens the door to being recruited and used by organizations which seek to use their testimony as a weapon against a minority religion.

"Others may ask, if the group is as transparently evil as he now contends, why did he espouse its cause in the first place? In the process of trying to explain his own seduction and to confirm the worst fears about the group, the apostate is likely to paint a caricature of the group that is shaped more by his current role as apostate than by his actual experience in the group."

Fun fact: they call them kingdom halls in English. They're not always austere buildings. Some of them are in strip malls and odd places.

>-you gotta spend your fridays / saturday afternoons

I only remember attending services twice a week: sunday mornings at the kingdom hall and tuesday bible studies at a family's residence at 5 PM. I don't remember any of it being particularly interesting or memorable. Every Summer there would be this week long convention in San Diego and it was boring too. But we'd all go out for pizza or fast food after services or whatever. Back then they were outdoors and at Jack Murphy Stadium (Qualcomm stadium).
