Why does the imaginary depictions of the conquistadors was so unrealistic during the XIXth century?

Anon I have a theory that this was caused by the imperialism carried out against african by the european powers during the XIXth century. Those people had steam powered machines and were dealing with african bushmen who had no chance. So they looked at spanish conquest of the Americas & retroactively portrayed the conquistadors as these iron mans slaughtering millons of naked Indians. This imagery still lingers in anglo societies and has also influenced us despite the spanish sources constatly telling us that they wore "armas y armaduras de la tierra" (ie native weaponry & armor) during most of the conquest
