People don't make fun of Indians for their desires. Everybody wants fame and sex. A lot of people are petty, wants to save face, deflects blame, puts aside scruples for personal gain. What people hate the Indians for is their shamelessness and lacks of grace. It's not they are boastful, it's that they're boastful in the cringiest way with no self-awareness. As long as you exercise proper social manners and understanding of other people I think you'd be fine.
