I use hellotalk to practice Spanish. Its been going well so far. I have spoken with many South Americans. What I have noticed that is that many will unprovoked shit on Venezuelans. particularly Colombians. Last Colombian I spoke to basically said "Venezuelans are everywhere now and smell bad." When I asked her how was Colombia. It sort of freaked me out because I couldn't see why they would even be upset. Most South Americans are very similar to me. I bet they feel the same way about USA and Canada though.

>>223000645Yeah and if you get stuck with RTH just remember after the first couple hundred characters it’s more about building a habit for learning and an eye for decomposition of characters to component parts than it is about actually finishing the whole book (and then volume 2).I actually didn’t get far with Chinese because ultimately I ended up studying abroad in Japan/Korea, but I really liked the defrancis chinese textbooks and I retained a lot from those even after years of zero chinese. The main textbook, the character text, and the reader were all quite good, and it’s all traditional characters because the book is old. Word of warning is that Xiaojie IIRC is slang for whores now in Taiwan though lol. Defrancis is the closest thing Chinese has to an input/shadowing method that I could find.
Does anyone have the pdf of this book?
>>222999753My anki sentence mining routine is like this: the media (mostly reading) I consooom can be broken up into three parts: extensive (something "easy" that I enjoy reading, mostly russian translated manga. This helps with internalizing the the grammar and vocabulary and boosts my instant comprehension), intensive (something that is essentially too hard for me but manageable, this is mostly native russian literature. Great for acquiring vocabulary) and finally random tidbits that I would read in swedish or english either way (mostly news and wikipedia articles. When I'm reading I will look for i+1 sentences and if I think a word is worth mining I will put the whole sentence in a notepad document. If the word is something really important like a verb I will put the whole sentence in the note, and if it's some noun or adjective that has an equivalent word in either of the languages I'm fluent in I will just add the lemma form of it and make an audio card with a forvo sound file on the front and word + translation/definition in either english or swedish. What a card ends up looking like depends on the sentence, if the word's meaning isn't immediately obvious from the surrounding context I will just put the unknown word in bold and then on the back of the card I will have a forvo sound file of the word as it is in the sentence. So for instance if the sentence is "нaвepнoe, ты yжe зaмeтилa этy шишкy" I will add a forvo sound file of шишкy, and if that doesn't exist I will just add sounds of шишкa. If the surrounding context reveals too much I will spoiler everything except for the unknown word (that is, if the word has a pretty specific meaning) like in picrel. If I don't more or less instantly recognize the word I will unspoiler a little bit of the text and if I instantly recognize it I will press "good", otherwise I press "Again". The back of the card will almost always look like picrel.

Is it full retard to learn Spanish and Portuguese at the same time? I am currently learning Puerto Rican Spanish and would like to learn Brazilian Portuguese but one of my friends suggested against it. They basically said because Spanish and Portuguese are so similar, learning both at the same time might cause confusion. What do you guys think?
>>223012547Cool.>>223012871Try it. Eventually If that doesn't work, stick with one of the languages. Some people get confused, others find it easier to learn similar languages. For example, I have trouble learning different languages from the same sources and materials.
>>223012871one of the few cases in the world where you shouldn't learn 2 at the same time with these languages
>>223013136Now is that as a result of Spanish and Portuguese being so similar or is it something else about the languages? Strangely, one Spanish speaker I practice with basically said that they can understand Portuguese speakers sure but it sounds like someone with brain damage speaking Spanish to them.
>>223013281it is because they are so similar. i only have anecdotes but >it sounds like someone with brain damage speaking Spanish to them.is a universal sentiment to any native spanish speaker when hearing portuguese
>>223012871Even bilingual natives sometimes confuse the two langs while talking. I remember watching some Argentinian guy who lived in Brazil for a while accidentally use random Portuguese words instead of Spanish.

Holy shit, I'm amazing at learning languages. I'm literally so smart, and my mpv plugin is fucking genius.
>>223020814Somewhat unrelated but for some reason I don't like the idea of using dubs for learning, maybe if it's something you've already watched, but other than the fact that it'll be better in it's original language, it doesn't feel right to circumvent everything in that language and avoid it, because then what's the point of learning it? I make myself watch anime because I want to see what Japanese people like, watching dubs would defeat the purpose of that for me.
>>223020814>a lot of the anime I've watched so far seems oddly juvenileis it odd that cartoons are juvenile? learning japanese for anime and mangos is pointless anyway imo because all the anime is already subbed/dubbed and simulcasted and it's way easier to find high quality scans of english/french manga than japanese
>>223021373>is it odd that cartoons are juvenile?I think some of them are "juvenile" in the Marvel sense where they can't seem to ever take themselves seriously, but also fall flat on humor so it doesn't even elicit any reaction out of you. Both countries are boomercracies from a similar region.Spanish is in South America, but not all of it, and I bet the economy of all these Spanish-speaking countries is smaller than the German economy, or at least the German-speaking economy. Ai tells me you can only really effectively study a couple hours a day but that sounds wrong. I am building up my ability to focus and study for long periods at a time and I feel like the people who study complex subjects like medicine or physics usually have to study like its a full time job.
>>223044792Maybe 2 hours or so is peak return on invested time but even grade scholers study way more than that in a day. When your brain feels like mush that's the point where you're not really getting anything out of it anymore. Though as a beginner that might already the case after less than two hours to be fair.
>>222987908Ok you got me, I want a German gf
>>223044792It's mostly for sort of narrow skills like piano. 3.5 hours of actual high-quality focused attentive learning is the max in those areas. Most people spend most of their time on autopiilot or semi-auto pilot. It's generally not physiologically possible to be in the focused hyper-conscious interactive mode for more than a few hours a day. But also doesn't apply to things like language or medicine where it's a broad learning skill. I have my own language learning project and from my own metrics I continue to improve from up to 9.5 hours of input a day (which includes up to 3.5 hours of anki) after which there is a massive drop-off in efficiency. On the other hand top musicians (the actual top world-class musicians - like the best of the best classical musicians) usually don't practice more than 2-4 hours a day since that's a very different kind of skill. There's only 12 notes - you don't have a million things to learn and a million connections to make, you're just trying to hyper-refine a relatively small set of variables so there's no point in stacking on 10 hours of fatigued partially-autopilot practice.

>>223024571>Most people who have learned Chinese (as Anglos) have said it brought them very little, if any benefit. China isn't really a globalized country like America, they're focused on creating some kind of autarky. Any Chinese person who wants to do business will probably do it in English.this is a low level assessment of reality and is the opinion of people who, if they spent time in china, didn't do much in life or business with chinese people. yes exporters will use english to makes sales, that is very true. if you are in shanghai or beijing and spending almost all of your day around other expats and some chinese who also are in those circles, you're chinese skills is irrelevant.but there are many othera (as Anglos) who can speak chinese and put it to use and get far out of the expat circles and far into places which you'd never even know if if you were in china and couldn't speak chinese. if you can speak chinese to the level where everyone understands you and no one ever thinks they need to translate anything or tailor what they are saying to a foreigner then you are in a different world.

English is often taken for granted and is widely spoken. Additional languages, often from wealthier and more expensive countries, are valued. In Europe, French and German are probably universally appreciated, especially in corporations, because companies from these countries are looking for cheaper subcontractors in the European trade zone and most countries trade with them. Nietzsche has a quote where he talks about the major issues with language learning if taken to an extreme:1. It prevents you from achieving conceptual depth in other fields (be it technical proficiency or in the liberal arts)2. It prevents you from developing a more complex understanding of grammar and vocabulary in your nl or the languages you already speak. To shorten the list of languages which one should consider learning i think its useful to come up with a list of languages that were prolific in producing fiction and non fiction literature in each historical period and for this i will take a biased perspective in favor of the west:1. Classical antiquity: Greek and Latin.2. Medieval period: Italian, Latin.3. early modernity: Italian, French, English.4. Late modernity: German, French, English. My question for you guys is, considering that language learning can become an addiction where you cease to engage with ideas and employable skills, what parameter can one use to prevent languages from overtaking your intellectual life to the detriment of other skills?I was thinking limiting the number of languages to a number of hours (for example, no more than 3000 hours of language learning) or forcing myself to learn an employable skill before engaging with languages again. Once fluent, how many books do you think a person would have to read to have a deep understanding of grammar and vocabulary in one language? if i read John Milton, the king James bible and Shakespeare, would my ability to compose high quality texts and understand hard prose in the English language be absolute?pic not related

>>223089453Okay, based on the video it sounds like her situation would have been fine if her father had just spoken English with her and not purposely shielded her from hearing it lmao.
>mfw I realize the tendency of European Spanish to use the present perfect where American Spanish would use the preterite is very similar to the tendency of European English to use the present perfect where American English would use the preteriteNow I want to find out whether this geographic pattern also exists in Portuguese and French
Don't die yet
How do I get over the appeal of the text? Already ruined my English pronunciation as a naive teenager ages ago by reading books and playing text-heavy video games. I'm trying to learn French by only listening and watching stuff without subtitles. I've already sabotaged myself by "learning" French pronunciation rules and doing a 1k Anki deck for several months before realizing how harmful it was.Today I listened to some Inner French episode and got only the general picture, but then I looked at the transcript and to my horror understood everything. The satanic rot of reading has already set in and I will never sound right.

Why is it that part of me wants to learn French, but deep down, I feel a sense of dread and a lack of motivation to learn it compared to when I learned Spanish and Portuguese?

>>223101808Verdade. Acho que vou aprimorar o meu português e espanhol, especialmente o português. Este idioma tem mais ALMA do que o espanhol. Concordas?

Sorry, I made some corrections without realizing that it's not incorrect in Brazilian Portuguese. I have deleted my stupid post.

>>223101856Spanish is way more useful than Portuguese plus Spanish is an UN official language?
But it has more sovl, that is correct
>>223078711I'm not sure if it's just Japanese genuinely burning me out but I'm starting to feel this way
>>223104183Portuguese is great for songs, just like Italian. Although Spanish has some good songs, too. But there is the only thing that annoys me about Italian: the pseudo-correct pronunciation of English words instead of italicizing them, just as Latinos and Iberians hispanicize loanwords; Brazilians probably do the same. As for its usefulness, Spanish is often overrated imo, and I’d rank it closer to Portuguese than farther from it. Still cool languageshttps://youtu.be/ZuewoFVHDfU?si=yTNsDgeofJlAACwe
>>223105116Btw how do you tell between burnout and sunk cost fallacy? I wish there was a flowchart or something
>>223101771Meditate on that sense of dread by locating it in your body and asking it nicely what it's really scared of, patiently waiting for an answer and encouraging it to open up and move forward. Eventually you'll find the right words for it and feel it change "shape", repeat until you are no longer conflicted one way or another. You might lose interest in French completely or you might suddenly get "amnesia" about the issue and feel silly for not starting earlier.
>>223105698>>223105698For sunk cost fallacy do you have a concrete goal? If so estimate how much time it would take to get there and if it would be worth it. If yes keep going, if no consider the following: is there something more enjoyable you could do to get there even at slower pace? Like focus on inputting from interesting material and study selectively when you encounter stuff you have trouble understanding, it will stick better anyway when you've seen it ten times before in context.
God I want to learn German again suddenlyI don't know why, fuck I can't commit to anything
>>223107743Learn two languages at once. Commit to it with one, and easily switch the other to different languages.
>>223107297>do you have a concrete goal?My main goals concern inputting. Outputting is nice and I definitely would like to practice it later, but it's not an urgency. Being able to understand at least anime without issue, understanding the language used in light novels, and so on and so forth. My goals are probably not that clearly defined though>If so estimate how much time it would take to get thereI think it'd take like 2700 - 3000 hours to get there, but I've heard full Japanese fluency is like 4000 hours of work>and if it would be worth itI'm monolingual, there are mental benefits to learning a second language. Beyond that, I might want to learn French, but that's pretty much it. I can't really fathom learning a non-Indo-European language again honestly. I guess Japan is still the fourth largest economy in the world so it could be "worth it" in some sense. In the same way learning an instrument is worth itWhat I like about Japanese is that there's never a lack of interesting content in the language for me. It feels like the one language that can almost rival English in that aspect (but that's just a matter of preference)I think I should probably just stick to it. Worst case scenario, even if Japanese is completely and totally useless (unlikely), I'll have learned a good work ethic which could be helpful in learning other skills.
Where can I get Pimsleur Castilian (European) Spanish?
>>223036496Is it modern Chinese?
I have trouble finding good material for immersion as a beginner. Didn't have to deal with this when I learned Japanese because anime. The language is relatively simple and well enunciated and it's easy to find subtitled series. But in other languages I don't know. Anyone have suggestions for German? I don't want to watch dubbed shit.

>>223110289>I don't want to watch dubbed shit. Why? If you like fagnime, most shows get dubbed and have great voice acting (compared to English). Subtitles are almost impossible to find though, but you can use Language Reactor's ASR feature to generate them on the fly, they're pretty accurate but not perfect. As a beginner though, you should be watching Nicos Weg and the Extr@ sitcom, it has captions and perfect for your level. But if you're one of those that can't stand learner content, here's some German media that I liked:>seriesDarkBabylon BerlinDas Boot (2018)Achtsam MordenViktor Bringt'sKleoDogs of BerlinBarbarians>moviesEr ist wieder daDer Untergang

>>223109129Sounds like good goal with a realistic timeline. I've probably put in around that many hours or more though can't say exactly since it's not like I count it, and I'm good at the language but no master. >animeAnime is a very wide category and a lot of people make the mistake to think that the language is necessarily easy because it's a cartoon. Sure after 4k hours anyone should have an easy time with a lot of stuff but depending on the topic there's shows with heavy use of slang, jargon, archaic language, dialects etc that can really push the difficulty level. The amount of contextual knowledge needed to understand advanced level spoken Japanese is huge, pic related and that's the norm not the exception. >light novelsI haven't read very many since they don't interest me so I went straight for regular novels, but these should be a comfortable read at that point and likely much earlier. Anyway everyone I know who's gotten good at the language has done so by finding stuff they enjoy doing with the language along the way. Personally I started with devouring hundreds of volumes of manga.>I can't really fathom learning a non-Indo-European language again honestly.Hah me neither!
