I use hellotalk to practice Spanish. Its been going well so far. I have spoken with many South Americans. What I have noticed that is that many will unprovoked shit on Venezuelans. particularly Colombians. Last Colombian I spoke to basically said "Venezuelans are everywhere now and smell bad." When I asked her how was Colombia. It sort of freaked me out because I couldn't see why they would even be upset. Most South Americans are very similar to me. I bet they feel the same way about USA and Canada though.

I actually didn’t get far with Chinese because ultimately I ended up studying abroad in Japan/Korea, but I really liked the defrancis chinese textbooks and I retained a lot from those even after years of zero chinese. The main textbook, the character text, and the reader were all quite good, and it’s all traditional characters because the book is old. Word of warning is that Xiaojie IIRC is slang for whores now in Taiwan though lol. Defrancis is the closest thing Chinese has to an input/shadowing method that I could find.

My anki sentence mining routine is like this: the media (mostly reading) I consooom can be broken up into three parts: extensive (something "easy" that I enjoy reading, mostly russian translated manga. This helps with internalizing the the grammar and vocabulary and boosts my instant comprehension), intensive (something that is essentially too hard for me but manageable, this is mostly native russian literature. Great for acquiring vocabulary) and finally random tidbits that I would read in swedish or english either way (mostly news and wikipedia articles. When I'm reading I will look for i+1 sentences and if I think a word is worth mining I will put the whole sentence in a notepad document. If the word is something really important like a verb I will put the whole sentence in the note, and if it's some noun or adjective that has an equivalent word in either of the languages I'm fluent in I will just add the lemma form of it and make an audio card with a forvo sound file on the front and word + translation/definition in either english or swedish. What a card ends up looking like depends on the sentence, if the word's meaning isn't immediately obvious from the surrounding context I will just put the unknown word in bold and then on the back of the card I will have a forvo sound file of the word as it is in the sentence. So for instance if the sentence is "нaвepнoe, ты yжe зaмeтилa этy шишкy" I will add a forvo sound file of шишкy, and if that doesn't exist I will just add sounds of шишкa. If the surrounding context reveals too much I will spoiler everything except for the unknown word (that is, if the word has a pretty specific meaning) like in picrel. If I don't more or less instantly recognize the word I will unspoiler a little bit of the text and if I instantly recognize it I will press "good", otherwise I press "Again". The back of the card will almost always look like picrel.

It's mostly for sort of narrow skills like piano. 3.5 hours of actual high-quality focused attentive learning is the max in those areas. Most people spend most of their time on autopiilot or semi-auto pilot. It's generally not physiologically possible to be in the focused hyper-conscious interactive mode for more than a few hours a day.

But also doesn't apply to things like language or medicine where it's a broad learning skill. I have my own language learning project and from my own metrics I continue to improve from up to 9.5 hours of input a day (which includes up to 3.5 hours of anki) after which there is a massive drop-off in efficiency. On the other hand top musicians (the actual top world-class musicians - like the best of the best classical musicians) usually don't practice more than 2-4 hours a day since that's a very different kind of skill. There's only 12 notes - you don't have a million things to learn and a million connections to make, you're just trying to hyper-refine a relatively small set of variables so there's no point in stacking on 10 hours of fatigued partially-autopilot practice.

Nietzsche has a quote where he talks about the major issues with language learning if taken to an extreme:

To shorten the list of languages which one should consider learning i think its useful to come up with a list of languages that were prolific in producing fiction and non fiction literature in each historical period and for this i will take a biased perspective in favor of the west:

3. early modernity: Italian, French, English.
4. Late modernity: German, French, English.

My question for you guys is, considering that language learning can become an addiction where you cease to engage with ideas and employable skills, what parameter can one use to prevent languages from overtaking your intellectual life to the detriment of other skills?

I was thinking limiting the number of languages to a number of hours (for example, no more than 3000 hours of language learning) or forcing myself to learn an employable skill before engaging with languages again.

Once fluent, how many books do you think a person would have to read to have a deep understanding of grammar and vocabulary in one language? if i read John Milton, the king James bible and Shakespeare, would my ability to compose high quality texts and understand hard prose in the English language be absolute?

My strategy of slowly increasing my active study time by 5 minutes each day has been going on for over a week now.
I'm up to 65 minutes in 2 different languages. 60 minutes of anki and now I build up to one hour of comprehensible input video watching.
Once I get up to an hour of that I'm going to reward myself by allowing myself to start building up to an hour of vidya in my target lang.

You can read books or watch lectures in my TL, hitting two birds with one stone. Although, learning through another language definitely slows you down.

True. Time spent inpooting in another language means less time inpooting in your NL and thus less development. Realistically it's only dangerous for young children, who need a specific language to succeed in their environment and their parents for whatever reason insist on using a different one at home. Some parents really want a bilingual or trilingual kid because it's exotic and they can show it off, I've seen a couple /lang/tards want to teach their kid a language they don't even speak.

I like to post this video because it makes me people seethe. Bilingualism can turn your kid retarded if you aren't careful about it, there is a cost to everything and language doesn't develop magically out of thin air, it needs input and there are only so many hours in the day. Developing in two languages means sacrificing potentially the depth your child could've achieved if he only focused on one.

How do I get over the appeal of the text? Already ruined my English pronunciation as a naive teenager ages ago by reading books and playing text-heavy video games. I'm trying to learn French by only listening and watching stuff without subtitles. I've already sabotaged myself by "learning" French pronunciation rules and doing a 1k Anki deck for several months before realizing how harmful it was.
Today I listened to some Inner French episode and got only the general picture, but then I looked at the transcript and to my horror understood everything. The satanic rot of reading has already set in and I will never sound right.
