What is dating like in Mexico and Canada? Is it the same as in the USA? I would think the feminine / masculine pair up thing is stronger in Mexico than it is Canada or USA. Some women are basically dudes in how they act here. Just look at a woman living in Urban New York City.

I know it's truistic to say, but you can blame the internet for that (well it arguably started with television, but the killing blow was from the internet.)

The internet specializes in giving you vast swaths in instant, decontextualized, and shallow, information without a coherent point. You don't need to focus on one thing before heading to the next, this is the exact opposite of a book which demands an sustained focus on a singular idea that takes time to fully grasp.

All of the books worth reading are in inexhaustible quantity online for free, and now they're becoming even more accessible, audiobooks read them to you while you do something else. A video presentation can be watched for free on youtube. A demonstration of the actual content of a book is probably the highest elevation of it possible and they're usually free to view.

Gen Z just has lost patience with methods they know are less efficient. If you can just dictate with your voice, why even learn to type? That sort of logic. Maybe not the wisest logic track to follow, but it's certainly one that works for them.

I remember being beaten and screamed at by my dad over math every night since I was about 3 to 5 years old up until I was about 12, and I remember swearing to myself that I would shun all math for the rest of my life. I have since never bothered to do a single calculation on my own, and it amuses me. I just ask a machine whenever I need to calculate dimensions of things or weights of ingredients, &c.

Reading on the internet is not the same process as reading a book. Furthermore the idea that the average working class person hardly read is blatantly false (at least in early America). The literacy rate of colonial America was around 94% due to several factors (religious laws requiring reading and writing schools to be built, and the settlers originating from populations that already had high literacy rates. Nearly every single person in America read, and it was important to their social and political lives. Not only that but they were more than willing to stomach more than 5 hours of oral debate (see Lincoln-Douglass debates), even with their busy factory schedules.

Furthermore, even if the claim that people read more [I'm assuming you mean books], was true, (I frankly don't believe it), it doesn't matter. Essentially all of our political discourse is now held on the internet, and therefore the content will conform to the bias of the medium. What this means is that modern politics is now more focused on looking good rather than actually discussing policy.

what im saying is that compared to present day the amount of text read by the avg person throughout history was minimal and it mostly contained simplified nonsense. even literates in the ancient world had knowledge bases that a modern academic can represent on one sheet of newspaper, at least if you exclude all of the erroneous or worthless material.
regarding the meaning of the word "reading," i absolutely prefer print to audiobooks as a zoomer. in a board sense even posting involves reading something on a screen, but i still wouldnt classify audiobooks are "reading;" they feel more like listening to a podcast or radio show to me.
similarly, i think you have to separate worth of mouth(whether thru conversation, speeches, poems/songs, etc) from print(books, pamphlets, magazines, and yes, posts, but as with archaic "knowledge" we can label certain types of useless "info" as pablum")
overall i doubt people ever consumed more detailed, voluminous, real print information than they do today in the West except MAYBE the late 20th century.

>One author tells us that Venus should recur through the married life in “a solemn, sacramental rhythm”. A young man to whom I had described as “pornographic” a novel that he much admired, replied with genuine bewilderment, “Pornographic? But how can it be? It treats the whole thing so seriously”—as if a long face were a sort of moral disinfectant. Our friends who harbour Dark Gods, the “pillar of blood” school, attempt seriously to restore something like the Phallic religion. Our advertisements, at their sexiest, paint the whole business in terms of the rapt, the intense, the swoony-devout; seldom a hint of gaiety. And the psychologists have so bedevilled us with the infinite importance of complete sexual adjustment and the all but impossibility of achieving it, that I could believe some young couples now go to it with the complete works of Freud, Kraft-Ebbing, Havelock Ellis and Dr. Stopes spread out on bed-tables all round them. Cheery old Ovid, who never either ignored a mole-hill or made a mountain of it, would be more to the point. We have reached the stage at which nothing is more needed than a roar of old-fashioned laughter.

I understand you mean well, but this mindset is exactly one of the reasons why literacy is declining.
>All of the books worth reading are in inexhaustible quantity online for free, and now they're becoming even more accessible
Reading online is inferior, research has shown that reading compression suffers when one reads on a screen versus paper; and suffers even more when hyperlinks are involved.
>audiobooks read them to you while you do something else.
When you multitask, you are not fully devoting to understanding the subject matter compared to when you are solely focusing on it. Not to mention that audiobooks are again, a completely different process from reading. It uses different parts of the brain, and you process less information from it
>A video presentation can be watched for free on youtube. A demonstration of the actual content of a book is probably the highest elevation of it possible and they're usually free to view.
Yes but what is lost when a book is transferred to a video format? Youtube is a visual medium, which means that it prioritizes visuals over information, what information you do get will be dumbed down to accommodate the visuals, not to mention most Youtube videos will be around 10-20 minutes long, which then further simplifies the message.

I played in a hockey league as a teenager where one of the teams was from a native reserve. Playing road games there was unforgettable. The town looked like this but winter. There were wild dogs all over the place. Their arena was big and obviously used to be nice but had fallen into disrepair.

Their team was full of big kids (probably overage) and they played tough and mean. Even though it was mid-level hockey, it seemed like the whole community came out to watch these games and their fans were intense. It was just a crazy environment to play in when we usually had a very small crowd at our games. But this felt like playing in the Soviet Union lol.

Do you not see the issue with this? Are you fully comfortable with offloading more and more of your thinking to an external source? When you stop knowing math because of a calculator, or stop knowing how to navigate because of a map, then you force yourself to become subservient to those technologies
>Gen Z just has lost patience with methods they know are less efficient
Silent reading, once you have gotten used to it, is far more efficient in terms of speed and comprehension compared to audiobooks or reading aloud. The problem isn't that reading is less efficient, it's that it takes time to master, and is more mentally demanding

Reading online is sometimes all you can hope for, with the costs of things nowadays and the immiseration of the average potato schlep. I get lucky at the antique stores a lot, and I have a lot of books that old folk try to get rid of (I found an English-German primer from the Weimar times, very interesting, the contrast of the English in Roman type and the German in Fraktur is charming). I need to get a CZUR scanner and start uploading. I bought the wrong one awhile ago, it's just a document scanner, I'm really asshurt about it.

>Do you not see the issue with this?
The issue of my dad not really loving me and ruining my childhood and thus tainting my entire lifespan afterwards with a sense of deprivation, sure. My life is not recoverable, so I don't care about doing anything important or good with it. I don't mind a computer doing my math for me.

Correct, and I would be loathe to. Imagine knowing how to use assembly or how a file is structured like some Gen X computer science student. I bet the money sure was good, huh? As the percentage of the workforce holding a degree has risen significantly (from ~25% in 2000 to nearly 40% in 2024), the credential has become mass-produced, leading to a dilution of the signal it sends to employers. There is no longer an incentive to try and signal any sort of proficiency whatsoever through credential.
