That's somewhat misleading because MSA and Classical Arabic are still the same language. The difference is actually a bit less than that of Modern English vs Early Modern English (King James Bible's English), it's not nearly as big as the difference between Modern and Middle English, and let's not talk about Old English.

In fact Arabs don't really make that distinction, this is mostly a western linguistics categorization, they love putting languages into development stages, for Arabs it's all "Fusha".

If we want to stay in the Latin analogy, it'd be akin to Ecclesiastical vs Classical Latin, except less so because the pronunciation didn't change, only the adoption of modern terminology (in Ecclesiastical Latin's case it was adopting Christian theological terms, in MSA's case it was all the academic terminology of the modern world) and the use of a simpler syntax.
