Of course you can but we usually don't order anything too huge and if we go out as a group and someone(usually a woman, someone's gf or friend) don't eat much then the rest just "helps"I think it's been a few good years since I last took food to go when eating at a place.
I've only heard of this happening with pizza. Would seem silly to do it with real food but I don't think Americans have real food in the first place.
