Then with other languages that don't have a good frequency dictionary at all, they tend to source it from media subtitles so it gets skewed towards like crime vocabulary or it's not even cleaned up and there's like English names in the list.With Refold, you know at the very least it was curated by a real person and it has native audio. It's not perfect, some sentences might be awkward or there might be a mistake or two, but it's still better than the vast majority of publicly shared decks.

Larping is great. Several studies have shown that people that feel threatened by acquiring a new identity perform worse when it comes to language acquisition. I feel like the reading method books aren't as fast or as good as normal language learning books. People think they are just comprehensible input books, but comprehensible input requires 95-98% of the content to be comprehensible, when, for example, in LLPSI you get like 20 new words, usually 1-2 new grammar concepts etc. in a chapter, which is too much in my opinion. When I'm at a comfortable level of Latin, I'll try a normal textbook for German.

I've done over 100 mined cards/day for certain periods but the review burden will keep increasing if you keep it up. I mine around 67 sentence cards/day on average currently and that usually winds up around 2 hours in anki. 30-35 would be a good number if you want stay 1 hour or under

Encountered a priest at the bookstore today who's studied Latin, Biblical Greek/Hebrew, etc today. Asked him if he had any advice after I told him the results of my work. He told me that you don't need to bother with pronunciation, speaking, conversation, output, etc to get most of what you want out of language learning at first anyway, and to treat it as a purely literary pursuit, and illustrated it with an interesting analogy about drawing well water. Said it's really easy if it's already decided for you that you'll be learning a dead language with little chance of it ever coming up in conversation like it was for his own interests. Don't know if he's actually right or not but it sounds like a truism that I'll remember

Tonal languages have that effect. There’s an interesting study out there that took a Christian film that was translated into like 150 languages, took native speakers of various languages, and had them listen to audio of various languages to see which languages sounded prettiest and ugliest. Languages that are stereotyped as “ugly” for cultural/political reasons like German scored just fine, in fact most languages scored pretty much the same, but tonal languages scored consistently lower, and consistently lowest when the judge spoke a different tonal language. So tonal languages are hated most by people of other tonal languages.
