>>223403269>>223402611Prussia was pretty based and I don't say this in the EUIV "MUH PRUSSIAN DISCIPLINE XDDDD AN ARMY WITH A STATE" sort. To me they are cool in the sense that for all account they were regressive savage barbarians who took over a Germany which, in the South, was on a clear course towards pluralism, liberalism and some sort of constitutional monarchy.Instead of that, the descendants of the Margraves of Brandenburg, whose job for centuries had been keeping the Poles from invading the HRE, which soon turned into enslaving Poles to serve in the fields of robber-barons (junkers, literally "young lord", as in uppity rich young guys on horse pestering the peasants), put the increasingly dominant German industry at the service of an absolutist monarchy one hundred years after the French revolution.
>>223404856God damn I hate it when misinformation spouts such memes.Prussia wasn't a regressive or savage state. In fact it was quite liberal for its time as multiple Tolerance Edicts were passed to regulate and safeguard the rights of various religious and ethnic groups. Various civil industries were also encoured by the state such as textilefactories, papermills, porcelain manufacturies and glassworks. In addition to being pioneers for a sustainable and regulated forestry industry in Germany. The south german states were as authoritarian as the northern ones as this was just the model of governance for this time period. In fact they used the prussian military to crush the revolutionaries that cropped up in their countries. And do not forget that the prime architect of post 1815 Europe, which was marked by repression, censorship and persecution of liberals, democrats and all free associations, was the austrian Metternich. And robber barons were destinct from the Junker as the former operated breached the law while the latter were just petty nobles (as they occured everywhere in Europe). The big difference being that many Junker families were unable to diversify their assets, as they just weren't as rich, and thus kept being based on their agrarian holdings.
Oh and the German Empire of 1871 wasn't an absolut monarchy. And the Kingdom of Prussia became a constitutional monarchy in 1848/50.
>>223404856Your entire post is based (mostly) on Sonderweg and post WW2 propaganda.>Source?Alrighty then.>The Edict of Potsdam 1685It welcomed thousands of persecuted French Huguenots. >Frederick II famously declared that "every man must go to heaven in his own way"His state practiced religious tolerance toward Catholics and Jews, rare at the time.>compulsory primary education in 1763 It was decades ahead of most of Europe, even if it was basic.>Establishment of Allgemeines Landrecht in 1794It was a progressive civil code (at the time) that bound the monarchy to the rule of law. Granted, it wasn't actually enforced and such, but the fact that it was passed was something. Also, saying all of that thing about Southern Germany is wrong because when liberal revolutions swept Germany in 1848/1849, the Southern rulers didn't embrace them. For instance, the Grand Duke of Baden literally called in the Prussian military to crush the uprisings in his own state. The only point you have here is that the Junkers exploited peasant labor (both German and Polish) through Gutsherrschaft, which was manorial serfdom, until formal serfdom was abolished by the Prussian reforms of 1807.>Prussia adopted a constitution in 1850Which deboonks your statement about absolute monarchy. The German Empire formed in 1871 was a constitutional monarchy, and the 1871 imperial parliament, AKA the Reichstag, was elected by universal male suffrage, making its voting franchise significantly more democratic on paper than Britain's at the time. Not in practice, sure, but still something in theory.Still, it was a conservative system where the Kaiser held immense executive power because of controlling the military and appointing the Chancellor independently of parliament, (see the entire thing about Saverne Affair to see how Kaiser still had the final say) but calling it an absolutist monarchy ignores how the German state actually functioned.
