Everyone greatly exaggerates how strange French is as a Romance language.Aside from its pronunciation and fucked up spelling, the grammar and vocabulary are no more unique than those of Spanish or Italian. And much of that pronunciation (guttural R, silent letters) are evolutions from the modern period.
