>>223405059Think about this carefully. At the time half the continent belonged to the Spanish Empire and there were still French colonies around. Now if Britain wanted to take that land and did it with their colonies it would ruin them diplomatically, but if an independent state with no ties to Britain did so then it's an isolated incident. The US rather famously backstabbed the French crown then proceeded to consume their colonies, if Britain had done this it would have been a diplomatic catastrophe. Most conservatives in the US at that time were still loyalists, they even copied Victorian culture later on.
