It will be seen that, as used, the word ‘Colonialism’ is almost entirely meaningless. In conversation, of course, it is used even more wildly than in print. I have heard it applied to borders, museums, archaeology, tourism, multinational corporations, development aid, language policy, Israel, Russia, China, the United States, France, the United Kingdom, globalization, counter terrorism, immigration law, foreign investment, gentrification, and I do not know what else. Except for the relatively small number of colonialism sympathizers, almost any person would accept ‘oppressor’ as a synonym for ‘colonialist’. That is about as near to a definition as this much-abused word has come.
People are just mad that Europeans stopped fighting their neighbors for a while and encountered browns while they still were.
