Nolan uses the *Odyssey* as a mask to talk about the USA.There is a clear subtext regarding American hegemony and military interventionism—forces that ultimately create a chaotic, uncertain present/future characterized by multipolarity (various islands with their own "cultures" that care nothing for Greco-Trojan nonsense and have their own cultural rites), as well as a general demoralization and a lack of faith in institutions.There is absolutely nothing of the spirit of Homer’s work in this *Odyssey* film.I recommend the 1968 Italian miniseries if you want something more faithful to the original work.

Achilles regrets choosing to die in battle, Agamemnon is killed by his wife, all of Odysseus' men are killed, and Ajax dies of madness after not receiving Achilles' weapons. The Odyssey is a clear critique of militarism, while the Iliad is a praise of military activity.
