We got bamboozled into picking up where the British left off in terms of constantly having to prop up failing Middle Eastern countries to preserve the status quo and keep Russia or whoever out.Every once in a while we get tired of doing it and decide they can be free for a while and do whatever they want, expecting that giving power to the people will help them improve their countries, but then they usually just vote for Islamists and/or have a civil war and we regret letting the dictator go
