I will say Taiwanese music scene is pretty cool, and the mainland has more indy stuff like OYS that is excellent and quite poetic. That helped me a lot, but I'm a big musicfag. You're right you have to like the cultural output. That's how I learned Japanese, from SUN-TV Tigers games, but now I'm only fluent when I talk about baseball...
