France had European immigration to the same proportion as the USA and yet no one seems to remember it. It's basically completely absent from our collective memory and it doesn't matters in our national identity at all. People might be aware there was some migration but they don't know the sheer scale of it.Meanwhile Americans constantly talk about it, they're very conscious that they are a country of immigration. Every other American seems to be some sort of euromutt, and they often speak so proudly of x and y ancestor. In fact a lot of them seem so mixed that they have to take genetic tests to know about their family history. In addition, they still have entire groups of people who identify as x or y and there are huge subcultures from this. None of this is present in France.Why is that?
