I actually found it pretty true to Odysseus in the translation I've read, he acts like a moron and suffers the consequences; they slaughter troy but expect xenia when they arrive with soldiers all the time at the Polyphemus and at Circe and at the Laestrygonians. Odysseus unnecessarily and arrogantly fire the arrow at Polyphemus. While I think it was too overt and kinda hated it, the greeks being the seapeople all along and causing their own civilization collapse with wars was clearly not trying to justify it, I think Nolan got Odysseus' character quite accurately tbqh.

It's lone of the most recurring themes in both the poem (and the movie, Nolan even exaggerated that for Circe, downplaying other stuff instead). The point is that OP gets it wrong, you're not supposed to feel sorry for Odysseus, he is quite arrogant.

Even Argo's story (which was twisted and cut in the movie) by importance comes before the thing Nolan calls Zeus' law.

Pride is also why he turned around and shot Polyphemus. In the poem, he murders Antinous (literally anti-mind, or metaphorically "ignorance") and Eurymachus (the brute braggart) because he returns from Alcinous (strength of mind) as a beggar with his ego stripped away by Athena.
