Is it true that most people in West Africa (specifically Sahel) and the northern Caucasus were pagans until fairly recently (18th and 19th centuries) and only started to convert to Islam en masse as a reaction to French and Russians colonizing the two regions? Before that Islam was only present among certain nobles, cities or ethnic groups and it wasn't as widespread as it is today in both regions.
