His views were eclectic enough that he doesn't fit with either of the poles of the modern political divide. He had left-wing elements in him (commitment to democracy, belief in the essential goodness of humans, desire to overturn oppressive institutions, science-worship) and right-wing (literally owned slaves and believed blacks were inferior to whites, believed in states rights)

I don't think American conservatives must always be in favor of conserving social institutions in all cases. They want to conserve present American institutions that were created by revolutionary liberalism. So it isn't reasonable to expect they should have a favorable view of other forms of status quo other than their own just because they call themselves conservatives
