human life is a strange thing. People are not strong enough to live only for themselves and die only for themselves. Human beings naturally seek something beyond themselves, a cause, an ideal, or something worth dedicating themselves to. If a person lives only for their own sake, they soon grow tired of it. In the same way, when it comes to death, the idea of dying for something inevitably arises. In the past, that "something" was often one's nation. Dying for one's country was considered the most glorious, heroic, and honorable way to die. Today, however, that ideal no longer exists. That is only natural, because democracy is a political system that does not require such a concept. Even so, if people cannot recognize a value greater than themselves, there remains a psychological state in which even life itself and death itself can come to feel meaningless.
