Even the chainmail appears criminally incorrect.My argument is that everything – helmets, shoulder plates, torso/lorica segmentata, foot/shin plates – was covered, sewn in fabric: wool, linen, hemp, nettle, and/or leather.The average soldiery had their tunic as primary clothing, yes, then the armor was covered in additional fabric for additional protection. For example, I believe the lorica segmentata was sewn in, either leather, or linen dampened in waterproof oil. It makes sense; or adorned in a chainmail pattern with scrunched/crinkled or knotted bumps made out of linen, covering the plates.
