A Croatian couple visited Belgrade and was impressed by it. I find it interesting that a culture that has literally nothing in common with us apart from the artificially imposed language by the evil Serbian elite in the 20th century releases a video like this, not to mention how much Nordic blood they have compared to us.
I liked how well informed they are about Belgrade's history, so it's an educational video as well.

how is that strange? everyone knows Croats consider Belgrade the best party city in all of the ex-yu area.

I wish I could party all night long on the splav by Ada Huja.

Those are zainichi Serbs or Hercegovci. Real Croats are blonde, blue eyed and hate Serbia, everybody else is an impostor, even if they are 90% of the modern Croatian population.

I can understand them, they have really fragile identity because they wish they were considered western/central European but they subconsciously feel like enjoying Balkan music makes them look Turkish in the eyes of westerners. I don't think it's true, though. There are quite a lot of Germans who come to Belgrade for fun too and they don't feel like they're losing their westernity. Croats can safely enjoy Belgrade and Serbian popculture without making it part of their own culture so they are 'safe' from 'becoming Balkan' if that's what they hate that much (I wish my country was more Balkan desu)
>>
>>223585872
Problem is that we are tall, dark and handsome, good at basketball, big dicks so kind of like European black people, which is why they are angry at us.
That's why we are always relaxed, with nothing to prove and why they are always so pressed.
>>
I've visited Belgrade just over 10 years ago and the touristy parts were admittedly nice and well maintained. But I was honestly kind of shocked when I ventured a bit further out of those. Not trying to be insulting, but it genuinely felt like a shithole. Novi Sad was similar but a bit better overall

>That's why we are always relaxed,
I wouldn't agree, Serbs can get pretty angry too, your history or even current political issues confirm that.

Macedonians or Bosnjaks are more like what you describe.

Btw, don't get me wrong, I think it's a bit sad that modern Croat culture is losing to Serb popculture so much, it wasn't like that in Yugoslavia for some reason - or at least Croat culture had its strong points where it was unmatched by Serbian culture (like rock/synthpop or movies). Nowadays it feels like Croatia barely produces anything, everything there is either Serbian or western. Vuco tries to save their face but Croats hate him (you cannot be a prophet in your own country)
>>
>>223586089
That's most of the cities in Europe, but our ones are shittier cs grafitti and greyness. At least you won't get stabbed by a migrant I guess like if you'd venture in the wrong street in any of the Spanish/Portuguese/French/English/Italy cities. As someone who lives here there is near zero risk.
>>
>>223586089
>Not trying to be insulting, but it genuinely felt like a shithole

I think Belgrade's chaos and general lack of maintenance gives it the right atmosphere and vibe, you know, after all that's what you expect when you go to Serbia. I'd feel rather disappointed if I booked a trip to the Balkans and I got a sterile German-like boring city.

If you want a Slovene-like city just go to Zlatibor or wherever else boomers go.
>>
>>223586186
Not to the amount I experienced in Belgrade, at least not any of the cities in Austria, Italy and Germany I visited.
I was honestly speechless at how many free roaming gypsies Belgrade hosts. In a single day I've had three incidences with them and saw a group of Serbian teen delinquents steal beer from a small corner shop and taunt the worker as they ran away. Though I will admit that was funny, but still shocking to experience
>>
>>223586346
What? I don't live in Belgrade, I only go to that shithole few times a year.
Interesting that such things happen there.
>>
>>223586346
wondering if all of Belgrade is like that or the former Croat/Hungarian districts like Zemun or Borca are any better
>>
>>223586386
I forgot that there are a few suburbs in Belgrade that even I would avoid like a plague.
Like Krnjacha.
The apartment we got last time (well, I did not of course, I would never make such a mistake but my foreign friend rented an air bnb there) was in that shitty suburb and across of it was some shitty... I don't even know what to call it, it's not a park, it's not a forest. You get the idea, it was some derelict shit full of stray dogs. And not stray dogs that avoid you, 5+ dogs barking at you with foam running out of their mouth.
It was dangerous to even get into the apartment he got.
I've never experienced this anywhere else.
Even in the worst district in Novi Sad known for having a stray dog problem, this never happened to me and I frequented there for a year.
Lots of mystery meat and gypsies there too.
It felt like I was in Syria.
But otherwise Belgrade was fine, that's a suburb across the bridge you can freely avoid.

Yes, but they're basically serbs culturally and have been split from any sort of croat state ever since the turks took over bosnia in the 15th century. They have completely different traditions, national dress, music. even physiognomy. And their dialect is more inteligible with serbian than northern croatian or dalmatian.
>>
>>223585637
>I liked how well informed they are about Belgrade's history, so it's an educational video as well.

desu i find it kinda sad like they talk about Belgrade's history like it was the history of Australia or Mexico, something completely separate from their own history, something far away and not related. While for their parents' generation it was still 'their shared history' they were taught about at school, ffs.

Ironically I haven't seen any gypsies in Hungary when I was expecting to. But the country still looked kind of randown (I only visited western towns near the Slovene and Austrian border). Roads were poor and constant sights of construction wastes lying at the outskirts of towns. Towns and villages themselves while looking a bit decrepit had a certain charm to them.

>>
>>223590807
What's Polish opinion on Serbia?
If my impression is right from /pol/ you went from slightly positive opinion of us to downright hostility and feeling of superiority. It's been impossible to talk to Poles since 2022 since we're for some reason (by our own doing though) connected to Russia and seen as Russian proxy even though that's not even true.
Serbs kind of like Poles I think.
>>

Not really, don't know why you would visit reddit and base any opinions on what you see there. We really don't care, people complain about all foreign drivers crossing the country, I don't think Polish one are particularly singled out, those would be Romanians and balkan gastarbeiters.
I interacted with Poles twice, both times with ski jumping fans here and they seemed like solid chaps, if a bit too lively.

Generally most Poles don't have any strong opinion on Serbia/Serbs because of scarcity of contacts between us. We have a general stereotype about Yugoslavs that they love showing off, are very loud, always happy and cheerful etc., pretty much the typical Balkan stereotype. We call that "typowy jugol".

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6K-M_ijJ89g

Yugo music was reasonably popular in Poland, especially in the 1980s and 90s but back then no one would distinguish between particular Yugo nations.

As for the state of Serbia, well, yes, there is a prejudice that Serbia is a Russian trojan horse in Europe. Most people aren't interested enough to dig deeper and understand all the nuances, it's just the vibe. Your flag colors probably reinforce these stereotypes heh. But I think most Poles can also separate between politics and culture. I know that in the last years Serbia became a more popular tourist spot for Poles, at least that's what I see on the internet.

And well, obviously there is also the Balkan war stereotype, you know, Poland got the same media coverage of the conflict like the rest of Europe, so it was generally pro-Croatian and anti-Serbian, again - mostly without nuancing.

I'm obviously not talking about whatever diaspora stereotypes, probably these exist, especially in Germany, but I have no idea about them.

Don't get me wrong, Poles are definitely not hostile against regular Serbs. It's more like neutrality on personal level (with some generic stereotypes in mind) and I'd say slight negativity when it comes to the state/politics.
>>
>>223591137
well, Slovenes have that arrogance stereotype attached in all of Yugoslavia so I guess it didn't happen without the reason
>>
>>223591352

Actually it has nothing to do with them, we took the French revolutionary flag, it pissed off Monarchist countries (including Russia) so we flipped it and that's how we got the flag.

Western and southern Serbian towns and villlages are built in a specific way, without much rule and congregated defensively.
There's no traditional "centre" and then districts.
I am speaking in general of course and for smaller towns.
Although considering what you like about Serbia I think you'd enjoy those the most lmao.

People despise Belgrade and people in it.
I think it's a gray shithole with too many foreigners, too big of a city, shitty suburbs and annoying people that think being impolite and rude is cool. I guess it's not unlike any other capital city stereotype.
>do you speak Hungarian?
Hungarians speak Serbs and often don't even speak Hungarian. I had a "Hungarian" classmate (Hungarian surname) that is basically a Serb and made pro-Milosevic comments and saying how he'd kill Albanians (mostly as a joke because we'd say edgy shit all the time but he was serious about nationalism)
Hungarians are pretty chill and I only know a few words my grandfather taught me because he lives in a smaller town with more Hungarians.
Though because of their assimilation of gypsies I thought Istvan and other Hungarian names are gypsy ones until I grew up.
I like all Vojvodina minorities, to Hungarians I am neutral though because I know a lot of them are bitter and I understand why, but at least they're treated fairly here.

do people in Vojvodina really feel that different from Old Serbia-Serbs? have you been to Croatian Slavonia, did you find it similar to your region? i think they even speak ekavica there
>>
>>223593335
>do people in Vojvodina really feel that different from Old Serbia-Serbs
They do but it's on some level unjustified. Sure, the architecture is different but old Serbian architecture is nice too. Belgrade architecture aside from communist uglyness looks good.
Speaking about behaviour, all non-Bosnian Serbs are of relatively cultured behaviour except I find southerners (Nish included) to be weird, too upfront, speak too funny but I don't use that to feed some sense of superiority personally.
It has nothing to do with muh Turkish occupation, because regional differences simply exist.
I've been told we are the most cultured people especially compared to Belgrade-ians in tourist zones, when I visited to Sarajevo they also said that. I think whole region has slightly better opinion of us.
But I think that's unfair, except that southerners really are different and a bit more vulgar on top of what I've said, and people in Belgrade are scum (but not everyone of course, some very nice people helped me out).
>have you been to Croatian Slavonia, did you find it similar to your region

I wish we had them too, sadly we're extremely homogenous, especially for such a big country.

why?
>>
>>223593615
>why?
Have my own things to worry about and I think visiting every place just for the sake of visiting it is a female trait.
When I start touring Europe, it will have to be more personal than scratching a checklist, history and heritage related.
Slavonia is too close for me to consider it a real tourist spot, it has nothing that I want to see, it's also depopulated and worst region in Croatia.
I don't want to visit western countries because I'd feel ill seeing niggers and muslims squatting on their soil. I am not accustomed to seeing that many foreigners, especially those that don't act like they should.
>I wish we had them too, sadly we're extremely homogenous, especially for such a big country.
How is that even possible?
I heard even Russia where that's kind of true has the Kubanoids and southern Russians who are made fun of.
>>
>>223593726
>When I start touring Europe, it will have to be more personal than scratching a checklist, history and heritage related.
get that, i feel the same
especially that many places are just copies of some other place you've already seen before

>How is that even possible?
historical centralization, always one source of power, always one defined standard of Polish culture and language, while everything that diverged from that standard was looked down upon. Kinda like France (and in contrary to Germany or Italy).
generally negative stance to folk/rural culture - Polish culture is the culture of the nobles which was more or less uniform across the country.
and especially after WW2 - population exchange, people from various backgrounds ending in one place finally adopting just the "standard" version of Polishness with no regional flavor

there are some small groups within Poland that are different from the standard but these are usually considered separate ethnicities and not just regional Poles. Even though we have historical regions of Poland, they're not that important to people, regional identity almost doesn't exist here, neither do dialects

>has the Kubanoids and southern Russians who are made fun of.

Yes but first of all, this is just one exceptional group, while the general rule in most European countries is that everyone has some regional identity. In Poland, unless you belong to these few distinct groups (which all combined include no more than 10% of Polish population), you will be just a standard Pole with no regional identity. Regional folk music or outfits also don't exist here, we just have like 2-3 "folk outfits" that are used all over Poland for ethnic festivals even if they technically originate from another corner of the country.

I know it might feel weird to someone from such a regionally diverse country like Serbia or ex-Yu in general but for me it was also hard to grasp how you can be all so different in a relatively small country.

It was even "worse" in the past in the sense that it mattered more.
My grandpa visited his wife's home and her family in southeastern Serbia and she had one family member who considered Serbs from Vojvodina Hungarians lol.
Eventually he started talking normally to him.
If you think our regional differences are funny, they were even bigger before.

Well, I guess in your grandfather's times Serbs from Vojvodina couldn't even write cyrillic

They could, my father has books that were written in Cyrillic from communist times, it was just discouraged or outright banned? from public use.
You see, I cannot simply ask somebody on this because every second Balkanoid will tell me something else. You know that telephone game? That's how history here works.
It's tales around the campfire, nobody agrees on anything, everyone will tell you a new conspiracy you've never heard about and recent history here is smoke and mirrors, which might actually be normal because enough time did not pass for academia to sort all the facts out and most obvious bias to disappear.
Suffice to say that it was allowed and even practicing religion was but if you were religious you would not get ahead in communist times.
Somebody will tell you that you had people in leather jackets running around and imprisoned anybody who celebrated slava but that's, as far as I know, horseshit.
On the other hand, I am not a commie apologetic, communism is a rotten ideology, attempt at Yugoslavia by communists was weird, they didn't really curb nationalism except Serbian, I know that statement might be biased but it's factually true and I can elaborate why, even some Croats will say that on this board. But they didn't do anything with this reduction of Serbian power, impose a new Yugoslav identity, no, they created republics in more or less historical bordes.
Don't ask me how anything makes any sense, it would be funny if people didn't die over these things.

And anyways Yugoslavia in 1940s, 1950s is not the same Yugoslavia as the one in 1970s, 1980s, things change which people forget, just as they changed in USSR.
