What is fluency?
>>
It's not impossible to learn a language through book study, and you can definitely do it if you're dedicated and hardworking with sufficient free time, but immersion in an actual TL environment is completely effortless compared to grinding anki
From personal experience, I studied Chinese for 4 years only using books, then I got a Chinese gf and we talked only in Chinese for like 12 hours every day, and I learnt more with her in 3 months than I had doing 6-8 hours a week for four years before
At the time my progress just completely eclipsed everyone else in the class and they only started catching up when we all went to China for exchange and they also got to live in a Chinese speaking environment, then some of them (and I) got to the level where passive immersion doesn't do much for you any more and you have to start seeking out difficult media to keep improving vocab
>>
>>223619539
>What is fluency?
Really its whatever point you deem is good enough for your goals.
Du bist gut genug o algo
>>
>>223619539
Being able to talk about complex ideas in said language, even if you do not know the exact words for every such thing. For example, if you could talk about physics in idk, Russian, in the same way a native Russian who doesn't know anything about physics can talk about it. I hope you get what I mean

Have you ever considered that there could be a middle-ground between "book study" and intense nonstop immersion?

When TL feels as easy as Portuguese and English in your head and you can understand and express yourself effortlessly in it.

I'm jealous of non-monolingual speakers. Their default second language is english and they speak it so effortlessly and frequently even say they just naturally adopted it along with their native language. They get to experience two cultures at the same time, a whole other world opened to them while I'm stuck manually learning a second language and failing.
>>
>>223619539
Whatever it is, it’s certainly not when your 2L somehow becomes equal to or supplants your native language.
>>
>>223620410
>They get to experience two cultures at the same time
Bit shit though. Too many Amerikkkans online. What I would give to never interact with one of those "people" ever again.
>>
>>223620410
Why be jealous? The only reason they’re so good at English is because they had to learn it. We know it because it is our birthright.

If it makes you feel any better, most people have no idea how to learn a language as an adult, and having the experience of learning English as a kid doesn't really help.
So if you actually learn a language as an adult, you're way ahead.

>>
>>223620710
The average Brit is raped daily by Amerikkkan happenings we have no care for. Its just a demoralisation campaign really. The invasion of their retard thoughts into our mainstream politics is beyond retarded as well.
Its all so tiresome.
>>
>>223620586
>most people have no idea how to learn a language as an adult
I think this is the best argument for why investing the massive effort to raise your kid bilingual from infancy, instead of just starting them young, like around 6-8 years old, doesn’t really pay off. I mean yeah, if you invest all this time trying to make your kid essentially have french as a native language that’s great and all, but what does it do for them in Oklahoma? Compared to that, the cognitive benefits of learning a second language seem more attractive to me. For example, I think the reason one would not find it uncommon for someone classically educated, even in America, to know 4-5 languages 100+ years ago was that studying Latin and Greek for so long growing up builds mental habits and skills, as well as the grasp of formal grammar, which allows them to relatively easily add something like German, French, or Italian as adults.
>>
>>223620710
>I wish they knew a different shitty language from us.
Would not matter if they knew spanish or chinese, they are the global power of the West, we will always know what they are doing and what they think
>>
I want to emphasize that I am speaking specifically of American parents who learned French or whatever in highschool trying to make their toddler speak French. Not maintaining a heritage language is just laziness.
>>
>>223620796
>but what does it do for them in Oklahoma?
Job opportunities and status, genuinely. If it's some language like Yoruba, then no, but French yeah.

The Chinese are a global power, and you have to go out of your way to find out whatever the fuck they're doing this week.
Its purely because they're part of the anglosphere and we have historically allied with them that we get their some of their retardation.
>>
>>223620803
If you didn’t want to lose global dominance to use you shouldn’t have reverse-mortgaged your empire just to kill Germans.

Yeah. Even in Northern Exposure, the old bartender had a young wife because he knew French.
>>
>>223620874
I would like to mention that the retards in germany were inspired by the most retarded americans like Henry Ford. Even when you tried forcing segretation in the bars in the uk during ww2, the brits got sick of your shit and had to disband it because we didn't tolerate it.
>>
>>223620913
It's the same here, when I would tell people I study French people would fucking light up, so odd.
>>
>>223620952
I was talking about WW1. By WW2 we had surpassed you. Either way, our forefathers decided to found colonies, and if it had been Canada or Australia that surpassed the motherland you would make the same complaints too, because you’re descended from the cowards who stayed home. Like the Anglo-Saxons in ancient times, we left our diminutive home to found a great land over the sea, and our only crime is eclipsing our old home.

also I'm only good at English because I have no friends, no one to really talk to and since like the age of 12 I've had more social interactions online (pretty much exclusively in English) than in real life

Americans believe everything that is slightly left wing economically is socialist or communist. Left wing here is a broad term and equally gay however we aren't beyond retarded when it comes to those termsm we are aware that liberal means centrist and free market type cunts.

The right wing however is NOT american. That's REFORM. Tories were more focused right wing economically and the middle/upper/rich class. Reform is the american import and it's regarded.

The American people pick the government, so even if some of the people didn't choose the current state of affairs, they still chose it. Like the people choosing brexit, they CHOSE IT. Despite people saying "I didn't choose this", it doesn't matter because the majority DID choose thus it's still the people's fault.
>>
>>223624254

To an extent. People chose brexit, but we didn't want it the way we got it. Any cuck that says "ah man we should've just stayed" is a fag who loves being at the behest of neolibs and kikes. People choose ideas that they are sold, sometimes they are sold shit

The extra hours from full immersion is nice but not really the main reason. Anyone who's tried it will know the experience where if you completely switch over to your target language and nothing else it starts to gestate in your mind subconsciously in a way it doesn't otherwise. If you study your tl for 2 hours then immediately go back to nl your mind is now back to nl and is no longer processing tl.

Oh fuck off, every vote in the us is like 50/50 at all times. In the UK, it's usually just like 3/4's england's population which ends up being like 51% causing brexit.

And besides literally every politican is going to implement what the people voted for in the worse way possible in literally every case. Although in this case in specific to america, almost every republican voter are regretting trump so fucking badly. It's a shitshow. A travesty. Every expected a normal presidency but it's instead unprecentended corruption and terrible policy choices not to mention a million other issues that are bipartisan in nature with him. Also making the US hated internationally.

>>

Yeah, but come on, the deal we were gonna get was obviously going to back fire. Realistically we should of just demanded concessions or threaten to leave but because we just left, they had no reason to make a deal and so we left with nothing good. What did we reallu get for leaving? There was no benefit. Muh immigrants were going to happen anyway. Instead of poles, albanians (which we still have) or other europeans, we traded it for non-EU immigrants which are far worse. No government will stop immigration because of economics.

So I am in this awkward spot where I am fluent in Spanish and pretty decent in Portuguese. I can easily have 1 hour long conversations talking in Portuguese with natives and my passive comprehension is very high, especially when it comes to formal registers.

However my problem is that Portuguese has such an ungodly amount of irregular verb conjunctions, many simply unique for a certain tense and verb, due to all the contracting that has been going on with consonants. It's worse than French and Spanish.

I often feel very constrained when I am outputting because I try to skirt around this problem and end up using the same 10 verbs all the time when talking to someone.

I feel like there is no other way than to actively do systematic verb drills going verb by verb, tense by tense so I can more easily come up with the conjugation by heart and on the fly.

I did a study session today for my language-dabbling slot. But I'm too lazy to do a study session for my committed to the TL slot (German). Why this is so hard? The language is profitable in Poland, a lot of dubbs from anime slop to serious cinema, I actually like how it sounds, it's phonetic, I understood how case system works, but I don't think I can do it without a language course or something strongly structured

Based on Alexander Arguelles’s opinion, a study plan for a lang can be entirely studying at home, but going abroad and immersing 24/7 for a month or two (after substantial study) is a key part of locking in comfortable fluency long term. Basically keep at your studies and eventually plan to do some sort of immersion school or program out there.

Pissleur and Anki broke your spirit. Try downloading season 1 of Dark and watch the first episode with Language Reactor, you can probably get the gist of the dialogue and follow the plot. Or maybe a dubbed anime that you like and hope that the LR Automatic Speech Recognition generates decent subtitles. You need an immediate injection of fun otherwise you're gonna quit. Even if you struggle to understand, at least you'll have a goal in your head, "one day I can understand all of this", that will put the work into perspective and make it easier to follow through.

Native languages are never a meme man, it is definitely possible for revival. Wales has done really well, I’ve spent much time in the middle and north and I would hear Welsh constantly.
Irish is fucked though. In all the years I lived there I heard it fuck all besides when you’d go through Gaeltacts; who are all cunts btw. That’s the real issue with Irish, all the poncy cunts who instilled it into their families and communities after independence have tried gatekeeping it.
>>
How much vocabulary improvement do I get from reading compared to flashcards?
>>
>>223644742
Wasn't the irish and scottish gaelic speakers oppressed heavily and the welsh weren't though? Like the languages are dead and a lot of folk can not be bothered trying to revive it but it's not their fault. The only reason why english is so relevent is that they forced the language onto the rest of the isles (besides wales for some reason.)

Yeah Gaelic seems to be exclusively limited to those communities or the most obnoxious loudly political prick ever.

Governments will spend a bajillion gazillion dollarydoos and people will complain (in English) endlessly, but the reason Welsh succeeds is because they actually find proficient speakers, place them in a fucking classroom, and have immersion programs for kids. Normal Welsh people can learn Welsh, and go speak Welsh in their normal lives, without it being a political statement, and an academic-minded Welshman can go become a normal teacher at a normal school (but in Welsh) and kids can have normal education (but in Welsh). If Irish bounces back much it will be exclusively because of success with immersion schools, but AFAIK local governments go out of their way to block them from being opened.

Cornish seems like a total meme.

Latin doesn’t count as a revivalist language because it’s always been around as an auxiliary language. Of course some really really want it to be that way but it sucks all the joy out when you act like we should ignore Gauss and Descartes and Aquinas and just read exclusively pagans and jerk off in the woods doing revivalist rituals.

nightly night bump before bed
The weakness has been overcome so I buckled down and spent some extra time studying my TL from the committed-to-the-language slot and of all the resources, the pocket learning guide I once bought at a newsstand for the equivalent of €2.30 turned out to be the most interesting.
In the “dabbling” slot, I went back to Italian for two days, and while it’s cool, because it can be as sophisticated as French and as silly as Spanish, I’m not sure I will continue. I currently have no reason to learn this language except maybe liking old hit songs, appreciating the design of their guns or cars, and vacations. Maybe it's time to trim hobbymaxxxing a little bit and learn something actually profitable in place of that slot

>the welsh weren't though?
Yes and no. Wales is “lucky” that they were conquered by the English so early. It’s an odd relationship historically where Wales is seen by the English as different but not? It’s why law wise, it’s always “England and Wales” whereas Scotland and the north of Ireland/Northern Ireland are different. Wales was still suppressed language wise, but for the most part it was Victorian industrialisation that killed it. Its revival has honestly come just that they did it differently to everyone and Wales has felt since thatcher’s regime as being forgotten by Westminster. It makes sense they make such an active effort. Having an “enemy” or “rivalry” helps lmao. It’s the same with Ireland. When it was still under British rule, the GAA, Fenians and Celtic Brotherhood were becoming massive. Irish diaspora were even active in learning Irish. Then you get indépendance and I suppose that drive goes? Weird. 1880-1914 Irish cultural revival is really quite interesting. Also if it weren’t for prods, ironically Ireland might’ve still been part of the UK today, under home rule.

I know Spanish to an okay level. But I really wish I'd spent all that time learning French. French is such a cool language compared to Spanish. It has more media that interests me, and it sounds cooler. The sounds are hard though. I guess it's one of those languages that it's even more important to spend a lot of time listening to, right? When watching cartoons sometimes I can make out words here and there, sometimes phrases like "Ça suffit". But it's such a blurry language.
Anyway is French kind of unique then?
Also are there any particular resources for French you'd recommend? I guess the most serious way is obviously to memorize a bunch of basic words through Anki, study some of the basic grammar, and listen to a whole lot of French, like the way Japanese learners do it.

Spanish is practical and has a lot of speakers. The most practical language, though, is the one you have the highest chance of actually using practically. If you have no chance, then well, you're going to have to seek out Chinese, French, German, Spanish speakers online or whatever anyway.
>>
>>223650172
I got to B1 French but indeciddd to focus on Spanish for potential work. If you have a VPN, you can watch free shows on TV France. Also, TV5Monde offers free language modules for FLEs (Français Langue Étrangères).

French grammar in my opinion is a little more complex than Spanish and you can’t do things like omit the subject in a sentence. Also, French tends to use auxiliary verbs for things like passé composé
>>
>French has conjugations
>they're all spelled differently yet pronounced the same
God French is so fucking dumb
>>
>>223650570
>French grammar in my opinion is a little more complex than Spanish
Really, what makes you say that? It seems like they use the subjunctive mood less and they don't use the simple past tense at all except in books and stuff.
>>
>>223650635
For starters, passé composé relies on auxiliary verbs like Être and avoir. In Spanish, you could just say Yo Nació or Nació en los EEUU. But in French, you have to remember to use Être and then conjugate naître (je suis né aux états-unis ou quelque chose). And there are many verbs that use avoir instead (J’ai appris). Also, they must agree in gender.

Also I felt that gender of nouns was harder to remember.
>>
>>223650590
A lot of people gripe about pronunciation but I honestly find French way easier to pronounce than Spanish. French is no where near as fast as Spanish and you don’t have to roll your r’s.
>>
>>223650688
Oh, I felt the compound past tense was something that made it easier, since you only have to remember the participle and the auxiliary verb conjugation. But it's true that having to gender it and decide whether to use être or avoir would seem harder.
Also in Spanish that would be yo nací. Nació would mean someone else was born.

Learning any language takes some time. It helps if you have native speakers in your country to help your practice

literature. Consider trying French if it's your first foreign lang, it's a bit easier so you're more likely to make real progress without giving up, and the literature is also great. I did Latin and it was years of ball-crushing-struggle even with a reading-oriented textbook in comparison to how idiomatically easy to handle French is.

If you're learning to talk to strangers IRL, then yeah Spanish makes sense for California. Other strong options in California are just other immigrant languages like Chinese. You hear a lot of Chinese all over the state.

Well arguably it’s a bit easier simply because it’s semantically closer to English colloquial speech. We don’t say “I borned in Spain” we say “I was born” “I had gone” etc.
>>
>>223659745
Not really. We don't use the compound past for everything. "Je suis né" is like "I am born" or more accurately "I have been born", but it means "I was born". "Je l'ai vu" also means both "I saw it" and "I have seen it" in speech. There is a clear distinction in English speech and if you always said "I have seen" and never "I saw" it would sound weird.

>>223660403

I tried it on Firefox and the core features work fine, except for some lag and janky-ness. The extension is needed for accessing LR features through YouTube and Netflix, it adds an icon to the player so you can turn it on and off when you want. Netflix needs the extension, but you can still watch YouTube videos through the site, it's just a much better experience when it's seamlessly integrated into YouTube. They have some search functionality, but there's no way to copy/paste a youtube link and view it, you have to dig through the channels and see if it's in their catalogue. Offline media player with ASR works fine, at least the .mkv that I tried, it might not support all the same video formats/encodings as Chrome though.

I would recommend installing Chrome and the extension and just using it exclusively for inpoot when you need it with all unnecessary distractions removed. You could make a separate YouTube channel with TL language configured and only view TL videos on it to train your recommendation algorithm.

Gender is pretty important and it will sound very off if you use the wrong article. Like if I said in english I are hunger or something like that.

My advice to you is just to ALWAYS learn the nominative singular article with the word, so your anki card, if you are using anki, should be like der Mann, die Frau, das Kind. When I first started I neglected that and had to do it over. Other than that you will actually develop a sense for the gender of even unknown words. It really isn't something to stress about, but it will be a long process.

You should dream about something more realistic like being able to fly or inventing a time machine to go back and tell your 8 year old self to start learning a language.
>>
>>223678128
>>223679792
Isn't it a matter of emphasis on certain aspects? Das Menschenfleisch is simply a piece of some flesh, an abstract blob or material. The second one is something more specific and something in itself. It's more technical and precise? I'm kind of guessing here

I dream of being a confident reader in Latin, French, German, and Japanese; a B1 speaker in these living languages (so not latin) plus Spanish.

Splitting your attention on multiple languages reduces spoken fluency most, and reading ability least. I’m turning into a confident Latin reader gradually, so I’m adding French in finally and, with the combination of English + Latin carryover + 2 years of (american) high school french way back I’m making quick progress, specifically reading and subtitles is very easy. To put it in a phrase, “speak a little, read a lot.” Is my goal in all my langs. It suits me because I’m antisocial and autistic.

At what point is it feasible to read while listening to the audiobook and what is the best way to do it? I'd assume that you need a reading speed similar to how fast the narrator is reading and a very high comprehension of the text

The one thing that sucks about playing vidya in your TL is that there are so many games that make it annoying/difficult to pause the dialogue and it goes too fucking fast.
We need to make an index of games that just keep the dialogue until you press next.

The English talk would sound the same to native English speakers. That's why, in domains such as this, we should adopt a language that is native for no one. (I obviously mean Latin.)
>>
>>223687384
That shouldn't be a problem if you prioritize listening. Then you just listen to something you'd be able to (more or less) understand without the written text. If the audio is too difficult, I've found slowing it down to 0.9x or 0.8x. can make a big difference. Beyond that the result might not be so good, and you probably ought to find something easier anyway.

Does something like that make sense?
I'll continue learning German (my committed-to-learn-a-language slot) to the end of the year, as I planned, but in a spore form. Half an hour of Pimsleur and a review with Anki is all I can bring myself to do everyday right now, but if I ever need to master the language quickly (emigration most likely), I'll at least have some basics down and more serious learning should be easier then. What do you think?
>>
>>223689470
It's not that I prioritize listening, it would just be nice to get some free listening gains while I'm reading (which is like 95% of my input). My TL has a bunch of stress changes for different cases and tenses that are pretty hard to predict and I'd like to get some intuition about that through reading + listening at the same time, I don't really like listening practice and most of those resources interest me less than, say, reading a classic
