I tried doing that "all Japanese all the time" thing and listen to 3-4 hours of Japanese daily (podcasts, TV shows, etc.), and I definitely made progress, and I now hate the language and never want to hear it again. Kudos to you who continue. I'm sure forcing a prisoner to learn Japanese this way would be a good method of torture.

You're more likely to see them in books, comics, and other printed works.As for why it happens, it's because "have to" is a well-established combination AND it's easier to pronounce an "f" before a "t" (/v/, which is a voiced sound turns into an /f/, its voiceless counterpart, to become more similar to /t/, a voiceless sound, that comes later). The relevant topic is assimilation (phonology)A similar case can be observed in "as soon as possible" (sound of the 's' in the first "as" becomes voiceless. i.e. it goes from /z/ to /s/)

When the て form of a verb appears at the end of a sentence, is it always a shortening of ~てください or are there other meanings?
