Why Koreans loved this game back in the day?
>>223687808why did*
>>223687808kinship with the zerg
So they could get beaten in their own game by THE FINNISHER
I wasted so much time on that and Diablo. I regret nothing.

>>223687808It's the timing of the game release. Starcraft was released right around the time of the Asian Financial Crisis, which destroyed the Korean economy. Many young men with no job or low income spent a lot of time in PC cafes just playing games, and in 1998, a very good RTS called Starcraft was installed in most of these cafes' computers. And in Korea, once something becomes popular, everyone does it. Hive mind nation. And the rest is history, o algo.
>>223688017Also Starcraft Broodwar, unlike every other RTS game ever released, was a very mechanic/micro intensive game with an infinite skill ceiling, so it was very fun to watch pro level players play at the highest levels. The tournaments were electric.Other RTS games never really managed to do this. Older RTS games were simply too clunky and old, while newer RTS games were too user friendly and polished. Starcraft Broodwar was in the middle sweet spot where there was a lot of unpolished mechanical janks that pro players learned to tame with pure skill, and the game was also modern enough to enjoy playing.

>>223688141Before someone points out other RTS games of the era that were very FUN to play, yes there are a lot of really fun and good RTS games. However, none of them were tournament-grade. Starcraft Broodwar is of course not perfect, but compared with any other RTS games, it was almost perfectly balanced between the three races (Terran Zerg Protoss) out of the box (and with patches). If there are some imbalances between races, players over the years find solutions, or at worst they are often balanced with map design.Starcraft units also had quick and micro-friendly movements and attacks, and it has a lot of mechanical janks that can be solved with rigorous micro. These two factors are often lacking in other great and fun RTS games. I regularly watch other RTS tournaments such as Age of Empires 2, C&C, etc, but they simply lack the Starcraft X-factor.
>>223687808Starcraftgood times, it was my first ever pirated game.
>>223688428I can also talk about the macro level and strategic depth, but that's boring, difficult and is NOT what makes SC popular (they're the actual reason why so many people give up on competitive starcraft), so I won't talk about it.So yeah, that's the full and long reason why Starcraft Broodwar was popular in Korea:1. Timing of release2. It's just a fun game3. Extremely popular competitive scene
