The major factor, like in much of East Asia, is that until the 20th century wood was the main building material. In addition, a large number of buildings were razed during the Cultural Revolution and countless other wars and social upheavals.But yeah, I guess a part of Chinese culture is just not valuing ancient monuments as much Westerners do and seeing no real issue in destroying them in favor of modernization.

There's a handful of others that had numerous historical buildings reconstructed like Munich, Cologne and Dresden. The point is that in all these cases people painstakingly recreated specific buildings that existed before the war. As opposed to just building historical-looking stuff where it never really existed before to attract tourists.
