Could you actually tell the difference between people from these countries?
Like if you saw two people having a conversation in public, but far enough away that you couldn't hear the accents, would you know who was kiwi and who was australian?
I'm genuinely curious, how could you tell
>>
I can't and I'd like to know too.
Only Anglo countries whose accents I can't tell apart.

Fush and chips

I can tell Australian easily, however with NZ I have to use deduction, once they make too many little differences from normal australian in their speech, it takes me a moment to realize they're kiwi

so the key is to get very familiar with aussie and work from there
any obvious tells for these deviations?
like you can immediately tell a canadian from an american if they say a word like "about"
>>
I couldn't tell the difference between an Australian and New zealander until I was like 25
And I was born here

Abos and Maoris look distinctly different

Australian accents are generally stronger and more nasally so they usually stand out more, but if they are from wealthier backgrounds then it tends to get harder to tell the difference

Yep. I lived in both countries. Went to school in Straya and worked 5 years in Aotearoa. Aussies are gregarious, loud, foul mouthed hoons with a heart of gold. Kiwis are reticent, quiet fellows with a wry sense of humour. They also say "fush" for fish and "bid" for bed. You want an Aussie for parties but a Kiwi for helping you move house. Contrary to appearances, Maori are teddy bears, not oogabooga.

new world countries are mutted beyond belief. they have no typical phenotype

NZ has something more like a South African accent, it's anyone's guess why they pronounce i's as u's (such as "fush and chups") but I'm going to guess it's because of Maoris.

Are upper middle class and upper class NZers also more English accented like here? That's a pretty common thing.

Nz is Pakistan, Australia is India. Simple as

kiwis are retarded faggots, we are faggot retards.

it's difficult

Yeah, also with old people since they used to try and enforce it in school.

>>223945010
But Australia is more muslim than NZ
>>
We're essentially the same British stock although Kiwis are far less Irish demographically than Australians. There's more Scottish in New Zealand.

Our vowels have diverged. That's the most blatant thing. And of course, there'll be lots of subtle differences being from different countries. We don't have the same systems or environment.

it seems more common for nz upperclasses to have the more 'cultivated', local variety of received pronunciation, or more accurately in between it and the normal speech. we also have it, in which case it can sound much the same, but it seems a lot more established in nz despite going out of fashion. in my experience in australia, the young people i've heard it in were lawyers for some reason.
