Yeah but with modern inflation, just barely

Why not invest aggressively if you are a wagie anyway? You probably have very low living expenses as a single guy, say you earn 3000 euro net every month, if you can put away 800-1000 euro a month into diversified low fee index funds and ~4% yield stocks, you are realistically looking at completely bankrolling your burn rate in ~15 years on returns alone, let alone if you keep working full or even half time, if you reinvest the interest and returns, say you advance your career and match your investment to your salary and it’s even quicker

There is a way out

Average rent is like 60% of your income at this point

Mine is slightly less than 10% but I live in a moldy 1room.

you just proved that anyone who get gibs are so mentally ill or crippled that they have no ambitions or desires left to do anything except survival and most likely get housing either through family or the gibs office. you see, the time available to do fun things vs income to afford it doesnt add up with your budget.
i could survive on such gibs at this time since i have a house paid in cash, two cars, boat, snowmobile, a basement full off fishing and camping gear and all the tools in the world from biltema wrenches to an esab welder and emco lathe. i can keep myself busy without work.
thats why i freelance.

All I need is my fishing equipment, computer and food in my belly. Never felt the need or urge to have more. If that's mentally ill then yes, I am mentally ill.
I don't even spend all the money I get, I save a healthy amount of it.

based fishing fren. if thats all you need good for you. i dont really have an urge to have moooaar but now that i finally bought a house right in the middle of my dream fishing location i realized the locals do ice fishing, its a huge thing here. do you think i want to ski for hours just to drill a hole and get nothing? hell no, so i bought a snowmobile. having some experience with them an old 2stroke wasnt even an option, nor am i interested in financing a new. so 10 year old 4stroke tourer paid in cash. and when im first at it why not make it fun and buy the biggest there is a 1200...
these are the things i couldnt afford if i went from being wageslave to welfare. but doing freelance work makes me afford it.
i truly hit the wall waging in the city and had to get out of it, im glad i was able to pick this route but i wouldnt be miserable if i had to go the welfare route, just less happy.
