Here on public, folk-themed holidays, like Maslenitsa, you always see things like lapti (shoes made from strips of wood), and "Russian traditional dress" with kosovorotka and a Russian hat with some flower.
But I never understood, what does that even has to do with Siberia? We never were wearing lapti, they were a sign of extreme poverty and newsletters coming from Russia, while Siberian people, even of modest means, were wearing good leather footwear and boots. And we were never wearing kosovorotka either, neither the Russian costume hats, because people were wearing shirts with straight collar cut and fur hats. Bliny weren't popular here either, they were considered too simple, and people enjoyed Khvorost and pies.
Modern history underestimates how fucking rich Siberia was before commies.

Here on the left side of Ural, many people wore lapti Also something like picrel was common too. I don't know how they made it, but somehow it helped not to get soaked in the always swampy ground.

it's the clashing of local cultures and representation all the way to commercialisation for the outside world who does this, I give you a example for Germany, most peoples knowledge only comes from stereotypical pop culture who tries to represent us as the Leather trousers wearing Beer drinker, eating Bavarian typical sausage, I don't even feel represent even as one of their direct neighbours but it is what it is

The brain loves to simplify and generalize. Also don't forget uncle Adolf you are not shaking him off from the perceived german culture even if the last holocaust survivor dies in 2200.
