if you practice 2.5 hours a day starting at 14 to become a pianist you may or may not succeed at becoming one but you will always be able to play piano. if you learn to make a videogame and it flops you still retain the skills and memories having done so. if you waste all that time or just try inconsistently and never get anywhere then you will have no skills and no memories, just a sense of emptiness that you will feel every day for the rest of your life.
