Ethnic ukrainian lands never stretched that far north (except in the northwest)
Sources: i studied the ethnographics of Ukrainians and the neighboring nations

Also the borders are superimposed incorrectly. You can tell because Starodubshchyna doesn't fit along the contemporary Russian-Belarusian border. The whole thing leans too far north

The whole thing is a continuum but so are the Dutchies/Germans/Austrians. You first get a national identity popping up, and then it gets adopted alongside the regional identity (Germany), or overrides it and becomes the primary identity (most other Euro countries). Different regions gravitate to national identity at different rates. We could have gotten a totally German Netherlands, but we also could have gotten a Dutch Ruhrgebiet (especially if you follow the linguistic borders).
The ukrainian identity used to protrude much farther north into contemporary Belarus than it does today, thanks to the efforts of bloodthirsty commies

VGH, but I think it would be best for everyone if things returned to post-1991 consensus in terms of borders
