Modern day islam and sunnism is just remnant of previous epochs political pparty, propaganda, secret injections by converts. If you ever went to religious school, you would know that Muslims consider Islam as the continuation of Judaism and Christianity, or rather, the reversion to the true religion, since we consider those two religions to have been corrupted over the years. Hence it makes sense that many of the practices are still retained.
