"This thing needs some high density housing"
>>224020976Is that what they said before they turned latam into a giant favela?
>>224020996favela is a Portuguese term, dummie
its better than this
>>224020976yeah, the housing structure in Med countries, be it Spain, Italy, Greece, Turkey, Israel etc is really surprising. You'd expect that with their vast empty spaces, little agriculture and high urbanization + warm climate so no need for central heating, you'd see most of their people living in detached houses in suburban areas surrounding big cities. But it's totally not the case, they all live in some kinds of commieblocks. Especially gets weird since their cultures are very outdoor, they apparently cannot live without playing outside, doing barbecue with friends and so on. Something you'd want to have a house and a big garden/yard around it for. Yet they chose the opposite dominant housing type. One could ask where they roast their meat then?
do you remember that part in fallout: new vegas with the ghost hotel that eats people? they built it IRL in the same spot where you start the quest
>>224021009
>>224021009thats pretty nice actually
>>224021050Spain, Italy, Greece etc have about 4000 years of warfare necessitating walled cities with centralized fortifications for defense. Also, all water distribution was centralized until the 1920s when they got electricity. Moscow isn't even 900 years old. California was like this too before white people showed up and began colonizing inland areas. Also, unlike slavs all Spanish and Italian city planning used the same standardized designs created by the Romans 2000 years ago. You can still see this street pattern in hispanic cities such as Buenos Ares.
>>224021087is it
>>224021052vghvgh
>>224021156tell us more abpout roman street planningnever heard that before
>>224021009>>224021174What's that? Why the mountains are chopped off? What's with the soil?Is it a former quarry or something?
>>224021156all the historical references don't make sense, since all cities in Europe in the Middle Ages used to be walled, English ones too. Yet somehow north European people could switch to the suburban culture pretty fast, while Meds chose concrete commieblocks instead. And funnily enough, in Greece or Turkey more people lived in houses in the "backward" Ottoman Empire than now. The old parts of their cities usually consist of houses, usually small but still houses, meanwhile the new parts are just all blocks of flats. So it's not like it's necessarily their tradition, they just chose this way rather than going in the other direction. In Yugoslavia it was the other way round, the commieblocks surely were built but most people would build detached houses instead. That's why former Yugo cities have huge suburban areas around them with big family houses. Something you completely don't see in Greece or Turkey. And no one will convince me that you can have a higher living standard in a 60sqm apartment in a 15floor anthill with noisy neighbors up and down, rather than in a 200sqm house with a huge yard.
yes that did happen
>>224021235did you not attend highschoolI'm only american and I learned about it at church when I was forced, against my will, to learn how the church created western civilization and is actually responsible for holding the universe together away from the devil.
>>224021174>like a space colonyholy fucking kino
>>224021267commieblocks are just cheaperdont over think it
>>224021267>they just chose this way rather than going in the other directionThat's called unregulated capitalism, maximising the profit https://www.youtube.com/shorts/K9PdeOr6Jgo
>>224021009no it's not, that looks kind of cool
>>224021174
>>224021317if it was the case then you'd see commieblocks all the way across America, wouldn't you? yet somehow even in the most capitalist country in the world where the profit apparently decides everything, they are still enlightened enough not to allow spread of the commieblocks, even if it comes at a higher price and lowers margins for housing companies and no, commieblocks are not necessarily cheaper, actually self-built detached houses can be cheaper because people put their own work (with little help from the family) and always choose the best cost/quality ratio. You won't tell me that Yugoslavia was particularly richer than Greece or Spain, right?
>>224021267rural spain is a lot like rural mexicoshit
>>224021052no waydid they build old new vegas too?
>>224021235most of spain, mexico, south america, and the phillipines looks like thisthey had 1 plan to build things and guess what, spanish conquistadors did not innovate. "spanish" is the only architecture found literally worldwide because of this, and spanish architecture is just roman architecture devolved a few steps to save money and the spanish admit this

>>224021687suburban las vegas
>>224021573there are more densely populated countries in Europe than Italy where people still live in houses (like NL or England), meanwhile Italians choose to live in pic rel for some reason. Idk how you can claim to have outdoor culture and then live like that. This kind of housing is only good for extremely individualistic societies where everyone is closed in his apartment and there is no social life outside it (that's why it works so well in eastern Europe or east Asia).
This gets posted a lot, but I'll post it again.
>>224021730why would you assume people arent socialising in these areasthats retardedthese people all know each otherand they know more people than if they would live in a single family house in the middel of nowhere

>>224022051desu there are surprisingly many beautiful towns in Latin America hardly anyone heard oflike I'd never think that Sucre has such a pretty baroque old town if I didn't accidentally put the google man there just to see what the capital of Bolivia looks like (I expected a giant favela in the centre of the city, you know). This made me think why you don't have such towns in north America, after all these Latino towns were built around the time when North America was already being actively colonized (1600s-1700s). Yet for some reason the towns in North America were just all made of simple wooden huts.

>>224021050>little agriculturenot true>no need for central heatingnot true in many places. in fact, during the winter it's usually colder inside because houses are built to get rid of the heat so heating is definitely needed. besides, have you considered that high density is the best option for warmer climates because it provides shade during the hotter months? before indoor climate control was a thing, single family detached houses were the best for very cold winters and dense buildings with narrow streets between them were best for very hot summers; this practice carried over from that time. also, in spain at least, the huge population boom in the cities due to the rural exodus of the 60-70s forced the government to build as many apartments as possible in a very short timeframe. moreover, since these people would often go on to work in factories, that picked them up for work in buses, it was probably a lot better to have them all live very close to each other for logistic reasons. as time went on, the practice of building high density housing stuck around and we never went back to building many single houses.
Spain and Portugal look kino. Shame they got brainwashed.
Thoughts on El Cid movie?
Yeah it's weird to see especially since the very definition of a village here is exclusively having low rise housing. The tallest building in my village was 3 stories. In Spain entire village is just apartments
